"Clement Greenberg (1909-94) dominated the American art scene, and is still considered the most influential American art critic of the twentieth century. He almost single-handedly established Jackson Pollock and the Abstract Expressionists at the center of art in the West, and set the tone for art criticism for half a century to come. This biography, based on unpublished and previously unavailable documents, interviews, and archives, presents a story of imagination and grandiosity, of vision and excess." "Alice Goldfarb Marquis presents Greenberg's complex relations with numerous friends, lovers, and rivals, including Pollock, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, and Harold Rosenberg. She also recreates the heady art scene in America from the 1940s through the 1980s, detailing how a generation of critics, with Greenberg at the helm, used personal conviction and innate notions of taste to define the course of modern art."--BOOK JACKET.

The Art of Chemistry

A fascinating collection of the pictures, figures, and diagrams that chemists create to explain their craft In A Chemical History Tour, Arthur Greenberg took readers on a wild romp through the history of chemistry, introducing the unique characters, sometimes bizarre theories, and novel experiments that ultimately produced the modern science. Now Greenberg returns with more tales of chemistry glory, lovingly chronicling the extraordinary artwork that alchemists and chemists have produced in their pursuit of understanding the nature of matter in The Art of Chemistry: Myths, Medicines, and Materials. The Art of Chemistry employs 187 figures (including 16 full-color plates) to illuminate 72 ess...

The Collected Essays and Criticism, Volume 2

  • Categories: Art

Clement Greenberg (1909–1994), champion of abstract expressionism and modernism—of Pollock, Miró, and Matisse—has been esteemed by many as the greatest art critic of the second half of the twentieth century, and possibly the greatest art critic of all time. On radio and in print, Greenberg was the voice of "the new American painting," and a central figure in the postwar cultural history of the United States. Greenberg first established his reputation writing for the Partisan Review, which he joined as an editor in 1940. He became art critic for the Nation in 1942, and was associate editor of Commentary from 1945 until 1957. His seminal essay, "Avant-Garde and Kitsch" set the terms for the ongoing debate about the relationship of modern high art to popular culture. Though many of his ideas have been challenged, Greenberg has influenced generations of critics, historians, and artists, and he remains influential to this day.

Eight chapters by leading researchers examine the use of ground-state experimental and calculational parameters to predict reactivity. Among the topics of discussion are high-resolution X-ray techniques and complimentary calculations to predict electrophilic and nucleophilic sites in molecules, how structural data can be used to assess reactivity in strained species, and how predictions on solid state structure may not apply to behavior in solution. The book also introduces the principles of designing high-energy explosives and explains their important molecular features. The techniques described in this book range from calculation, low and high resolution X-ray, NMR, UV, to photoelectron spectroscopy of matrix-isolated species.
