Images, objects, and performances represent essential forms of mediality, which frequently escape our traditional understanding of historical communication. This volume discusses from an interdisciplinary perspective the varying structures and media of communication and representation in transcultural spaces of Latin America and the Philippines. Based on different topics and methodological approaches of the contributors, the articles reflect on the perspectives and problems of the integration of visuality, materiality, and performance as categories of cultural analysis in historical settings between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. In that regard, both the methodological and regional comparative approaches of this volume claim to contribute-beyond the regional focus of the studies-to the general debate about cultural theories and to make general statements about the mechanisms of cross-cultural communication in cultural contact zones of the modern period.

In The Representation of External Threats, Eberhard Crailsheim and María Dolores Elizalde present a collection of articles that trace the phenomenon of external threats in a multitude of settings across Asia, America, and Europe. The scope ranges from military threats against the Byzantine rulers of the 7th century to the perception of cultural and economic threats in the late 19th century Atlantic, and includes conceptual threats to the construction of national histories. This book explores the strategies adopted by the Jesuit missions under the Portuguese and Spanish patronage vis-à-vis Islamic powers such as the Mughal Empire in South Asia and the expansion of Islam in the Southeast-Asian peripheries. Based on a comparative perspective, this book examines the interconnections between the Jesuit proselytizing activities and the imperial projects of the Iberian crowns in Asia, highlighting the role of the Jesuit missionaries operating in Asian Islamic settings as diplomatic and cultural mediators. Traditionally, Germany has been considered a minor player in Pacific history: its presence there was more limited than that of other European nations, and whereas its European rivals established themselves as imperial forces beginning in the early modern era, Germany did not seriously pursue colonialism until the nineteenth century. Yet thanks to recent advances in the field emphasizing transoceanic networks and cultural encounters, it is now possible to develop a more nuanced understanding of the history of Germans in the Pacific. The studies gathered here offer fascinating research into German missionary, commercial, scientific, and imperial activity against the backdrop of the Pacific’s overlapping cultural circuits and complex oceanic transits.
Das Thema »Geschichtslernen in biographischer Perspektive« markiert ein Forschungsfeld, das in der Geschichtsdidaktik bislang noch weitgehend unbeachtet geblieben ist. Es ist wenig bekannt über langfristige Prozesse historischer Bewusstseinsbildung und historischen Lernens. Dabei geht es einerseits um institutionelle Kontexte (Funktion und Kompetenzziele von historischem Lernen in außerschulischen Ausbildungskontexten), andererseits und stärker aber um individuelle Prozesse: die langfristige Wirksamkeit und Orientierungsfunktion historischen Lernens, die Bedeutung von Geschichte in der nachschulischen Biografie, die Verarbeitung eigener Vergangenheit in autobiographischen Lebenskonstruktionen oder die Entwicklung von Geschichtsbewusstsein auf allen Altersstufen.
Geschichtsdidaktik muss sich gegenüber anderen Disziplinen, Fächern und Forschungsansätzen positionieren. Wo genau steht sie heute? Neben Reflexionen über Raumbezüge und Grenzen fokussiert dieser Band grundlegende Fragen nach den Bezugsdisziplinen der Geschichtsdidaktik und produktive Auseinandersetzungen mit ihren kulturwissenschaftlichen Nachbardisziplinen in Theorie und Unterrichtspraxis. Die Beiträge untersuchen Positionierungen und Selbstvergewisserungen und nehmen fachliche Bezüge und konzeptionelle Horizonte in den Blick.
