Chaos, Fractals and Complexity

This volume of proceedings contains research results within the framework of the fields of Chaos, Fractals and Complexity, written by experienced professors, young researchers, and applied scientists. It includes reviews of the fields, which are presented in an educational way for the widest possible audience, analytical results, computer simulations and experimental evidence, focusing on mathematical modelling. The papers presented here are selected from lectures given at the 28th Summer School “Dynamical Systems and Complexity”, July 18 – 27, 2022. Topics cover applications of complex systems in Neuroscience, Biology, Photonics, Seismology, Meteorology, and more broadly Physical and Engineering systems. The summer school has a long history, which began at the University of Patras in 1987 and continues with great success to this day. The original main purpose was to introduce young students and researchers of Greece to a new science that emerged several decades ago and continues to grow internationally at an ever increasing rate around the world.

A Panorama of Mathematics: Pure and Applied

This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Mathematics and its Applications-2014, held from November 14-17, 2014, at Kuwait University, Safat, Kuwait. Papers contained in this volume cover various topics in pure and applied mathematics ranging from an introductory study of quotients and homomorphisms of C-systems, also known as contextual pre-categories, to the most important consequences of the so-called Fokas method. Also covered are multidisciplinary topics such as new structural and spectral matricial results, acousto-electromagnetic tomography method, a recent hybrid imaging technique, some numerical aspects of sonic-boom minimization, PDE eigenvalue problems, von Neumann...

Renormalization and Effective Field Theory

This book tells mathematicians about an amazing subject invented by physicists and it tells physicists how a master mathematician must proceed in order to understand it. Physicists who know quantum field theory can learn the powerful methodology of mathematical structure, while mathematicians can position themselves to use the magical ideas of quantum field theory in “mathematics” itself. The retelling of the tale mathematically by Kevin Costello is a beautiful tour de force. —Dennis Sullivan This book is quite a remarkable contribution. It should make perturbative quantum field theory accessible to mathematicians. There is a lot of insight in the way the author uses the renormalizatio...

A Primer on Radial Basis Functions with Applications to the Geosciences

?Adapted from a series of lectures given by the authors, this monograph focuses on radial basis functions (RBFs), a powerful numerical methodology for solving PDEs to high accuracy in any number of dimensions. This method applies to problems across a wide range of PDEs arising in fluid mechanics, wave motions, astro- and geosciences, mathematical biology, and other areas and has lately been shown to compete successfully against the very best previous approaches on some large benchmark problems. Using examples and heuristic explanations to create a practical and intuitive perspective, the authors address how, when, and why RBF-based methods work.? The authors trace the algorithmic evolution o...

Solving Problems in Multiply Connected Domains

Whenever two or more objects or entities—be they bubbles, vortices, black holes, magnets, colloidal particles, microorganisms, swimming bacteria, Brownian random walkers, airfoils, turbine blades, electrified drops, magnetized particles, dislocations, cracks, or heterogeneities in an elastic solid—interact in some ambient medium, they make holes in that medium. Such holey regions with interacting entities are called multiply connected. This book describes a novel mathematical framework for solving problems in two-dimensional, multiply connected regions. The framework is built on a central theoretical concept: the prime function, whose significance for the applied sciences, especially for...
