The Future of Christian Marriage among the Igbo vis-a-vis Childlessnes

Marriage was ordained by God for the good of spouses and for procreation. But how often does marriage turn out to bring unhappiness to partners! And how often do even happy marriages end up childless! Among the Igbo of South-eastern Nigeria, to whom offspring is the chief goal of marriage, childlessness leads often to unhappiness in marriage and not less often to the break-up of marriages or to polygamy. In this work, the author expounds the importance of marriage and its practice among the Igbo. He explains the importance of children in Igbo understanding of marriage and identifies childlessness as the key factor which could endanger (and sometimes do endanger) the Igbo acceptance of the Ca...

Ogadinma Or, Everything Will be All Right is a tale of departure, loss and adaptation; of mothers whose experience at the hands of controlling men leave them with burdens they find too much to bear. After an unwanted pregnancy leaves her exiled from her family in Kano, thwarting her plans to go to university, seventeen-year-old Ogadinma is sent to her aunt's in Lagos. When a whirlwind romance with an older man descends into indignity, she is forced to channel her strength and resourcefulness to escape a fate that appears all but inevitable. Sustaining Musical Instruments / Food and Instrumental Music

This 7th volume of SIMP is dedicated to two large themes that were discussed in the last Study Group Symposium held online and arranged by the Music Faculty of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in March 2021: ``Re-invention and Sustainability of Musical Instruments'' and ``Instrumental Music and Food''. Thirteen contributions were compiled in this volume relating to the first theme, while seven contributions were chosen to represent the second. The first part of the contributions illustrates that musical instruments have a long and regionally intertwined history. Often it is hard to say who invented a specific type first as well as to answer if musical instruments were used symbolically or supported in any way supported regional cultural aspects, or what feature of musical instruments had the strongest impact on local developments. The last seven contributions deal with various phenomena such as banquet music, ritual music and food offerings, instrumental ambience music, and festivals.

"The New Series of the ICTM Study Group Journal STUDIA INSTURMENTORUM MUSICAE POPULARIS starts with a broad overview on the topics “Percussion” and “Migration of Musical Instruments”, an outcome of the 17th Meeting of the Study Group on Folk Musical Instruments, held in Erkner near Berlin from April 1-4, 2009. 25 scholars from 15 countries contributed articles to the volume, which appear in their alphabetical order due to the fact that clear borders cannot and should not be delineated. Moreover, the editors leave it to the readers' community to discuss hierarchies regarding their importance or their qualitative refinement for discussion and further improvements are the main aim of th...

The Norman Admiralty

What was the real power of the Norman admirals? In what way did they practise their authority? This study on the Norman admiralty in Sicily focuses on the development of this office as it changes from an office to a title with increasing and increadible prestige in the years from the second half of the 11th century to the end of the 12th century. The admiral was an officer who worked in the royal palace for the royal authority as prime minister and was fundamental in orchestrating cultural activities. However, the admirals also established their power in fields separate to those of their position. The position of admiral was a unicum in Medieval Europe since no other political institution had a similar figure and his contribution was crucial for the development of the Norman kingdom in Sicily. The intention of this work is to study the sphere of competences of the admirality and to give a global and definitive view of the impact of the Norman admirals between the second half of the 11th century and the end of the 12th.

Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road

This volume comprises fifteen selected papers in five chapters from the 27th ICTM Colloquium on Drums and Drum Ensembles along the Great Silk Road. It testifies to how human cultures are never created in seclusion. The richness of drums and drum ensembles, including their repertoires, are also connected to long-term exchanges in military affairs, trades, and religions of various peoples. Despite the obvious prevalence of drums among all peoples around the world, their understanding and their repertoires vary due to different contexts. The studies of music originating on the Silk Road presented in this volume pay particular attention to the multiple flows of knowledge between numerous distinctive regions in the narrower geographical and temporal scope.

This book addresses the application of supply chain analytics to improve inventory management, a cornerstone for successful operations at many companies. Holding inventory reduces stockout cost, facilitates smooth operations, and improves service levels and customer experience; but it also ties up capital and goes along with costs for storage, obsolescence, handling, and other. Due to the complexity of the task, companies apply inventory models, which build on assumptions that seldomly fully hold in practice. As a consequence, the actual performance of the inventory system deviates from the projected performance and the full potential of the models cannot be exploited. This book covers three different problems that companies commonly face when managing their inventories: the introduction of new inventory policies in existing inventory systems, the use of algorithmic advice by human planners, and the accuracy of master data on which inventory models rely. By using mathematical optimization, behavioral experiments, and machine learning, the developed approaches support the successful implementation of state-of-the-art inventory research in practice.
