A History of Macroeconomics from Keynes to Lucas and Beyond

This book retraces the history of macroeconomics from Keynes's General Theory to the present. Central to it is the contrast between a Keynesian era and a Lucasian - or dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) - era, each ruled by distinct methodological standards. In the Keynesian era, the book studies the following theories: Keynesian macroeconomics, monetarism, disequilibrium macro (Patinkin, Leijongufvud, and Clower) non-Walrasian equilibrium models, and first-generation new Keynesian models. Three stages are identified in the DSGE era: new classical macro (Lucas), RBC modelling, and second-generation new Keynesian modeling. The book also examines a few selected works aimed at presenting alternatives to Lucasian macro. While not eschewing analytical content, Michel De Vroey focuses on substantive assessments, and the models studied are presented in a pedagogical and vivid yet critical way.

Capacity Building, Governance, and Economic Reform in Africa

This volume, edited by Michel A. Dessart and Roland E. Ubogu, records the presentations made and discussions held during the Inaugural Seminar of the Joint Africa Institute (JAI). The JAI was established in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, by the African Development Bank, the IMF, and the World Bank to meet the pressing training needs of the African continent. The participants discussed four main topics: the changing role of the state, governance, and new capacity requirements; the challenge of achieving macroeconomic stability in Africa; the requirement for capacity building in Africa; and the role of international financial institutions in capacity building in Africa. The seminar was held in November 1999, but the topics and recommendations of the seminar remain current and of particular importance today. The seminar was held in English and French, and both language versions are contained in this volume. 240 pp. 2001

The World the Game Theorists Made

The World the Game Theorists Made

Today, game theory is central to our understanding of capitalist markets, the evolution of social behavior in animals, and much more. Both the social and biological sciences have seemingly fused around the game. Yet the ascendancy of game theory and theories of rational choice more generally remains a rich source of misunderstanding. To gain a better grasp of the widespread dispersion of game theory and the mathematics of rational choice, Paul Erickson uncovers its history during the poorly understood period between the publication of John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern s seminal "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" in 1944 and the theory s revival in economics in the 1980s. "The World the Game Theorists Made "reveals how the mathematics of rational choice was a common, flexible language that could facilitate wide-ranging debate on some of the great issues of the time. Because it so actively persists in the sciences and public life, assessing the significance of game theory for the postwar sciences is especially critical now."

Advances in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics II

This book reports on recent findings and applications relating to structure modeling and computation, design methodology, advanced manufacturing, mechanical behavior of materials, fluid mechanics, energy, and heat transfer. Further, it highlights cutting-edge issues in biomechanics and mechanobiology, and describes simulation and intelligent techniques applied to the control of industrial processes. Chapters are based on a selection of original peer-reviewed papers presented at the 5th International Tunisian Congress on Mechanics, COTUME, which was held on March 22–24, 2021, from Hammamet, Tunisia, in hybrid format. All in all, the book offers a good balance of fundamental research and industrially relevant applications, and an in-depth analysis of the current state of the art and challenges in various subfields of mechanical engineering; it provides researchers and professionals with a timely snapshot and a source of inspiration for future research and collaborations.
