This volume offers a collection of papers dealing with how adversities have been tackled and expressed artistically from various perspectives in Ireland. Taken together, the many approaches to critical times provided here prove how, surrounded by outbursts of pessimism, financial hecatombs, and individual and collective discouragement, the academic community can find meaning in hard, intellectual work, and in serious updated research. The chapters here are authored by scholars specialised in Irish Studies, and provide reflections and discussions on the broad topic of crisis and Ireland, its description and representation, and the different ways in which difficulties have been discussed, imagined, or even solved.
Teaching Against Violence deals with gender based violence, paying particular attention to domestic violence, as in this field feminism has tenaciously sought to change the condition of women and, as a result, many international policies have promoted a significant social transformation. The chapters present active techniques that were adopted during the interventions to promote women's empowerment. The contributions face these issues from various perspectives, present the state of the art research in multiple fields of study and suggest educational best practices that can be used where this problem is particularly severe.
Perhaps the most serious challenge that the present volume offers to the latest literature on the tapie is the reflection on gender, space and literature from the perspective of masculinity, a position which has been no doubt neglected by many years of feminist debate concentrating on women's positions and circumstances. This is specifically one of the novelties that the Intemational Conference on Gendered Spaces, celebrated in May 2001 at the University of Huelva, from which this work springs, introduced. In the field of seventeenth-century English drama, women participated not only as spectators or readers, but more and more as patronesses, as playwrights, and later on as actresses and even as managers. This study examines English women writers' tragedies and tragicomedies in the seventeenth century, specifically between 1613 and 1713, which represent the publication dates of the first original tragedy (Elizabeth Cary's The Tragedy of Mariam) and the last one (Anne Finch's Aristomenes) written by a Stuart woman playwright. Through this one-hundred year period, major changes in dramatic form and ideology are traced in women's tragedies and tragicomedies. In examining the whole of the century from a gender perspective, this project breaks away from conventional approaches to the subject, which tend to establish an unbridgeable gap between the early Stuart period and the Restoration. All in all, this study represents a major overhaul of current theories of the evolution of English drama as well as offering an unprecedented reconstruction of the genealogy of seventeenth-century English women playwrights.

The Shattered Mirror: Irish Literature and Film, 1990-2005 is a response to changing representations of Irish identity. Interrogating the period of the 'Celtic Tiger' in Ireland, which was accompanied by widespread social change, the book draws on Lacanian psychoanalysis to explore issues such as prosperity, Europeanism, Diaspora, multi-culturalism, decline in religious faith and gender norms.
