A new voice enters the ongoing "Synoptic Problem" debate, suggesting the answer may that the Gospel of Matthew was published in stages.
In most areas of this Epistle, B. Ward Powers has come to share the interpretation of Paul's meaning held by the Early Church Fathers; although he explains and expounds those views. This is particularly the case in relation to chapters 12 through 14 where, in keeping with the Early Church Fathers, the Reformers, most Scripture expositors until recent times, and many present-day exegetes, Powers expounds the interpretation that "tongues" refers to human languages spoken on earth. The one major area where Powers parts company with the Fathers of the first Christian centuries is in relation to matters of sex and marriage, divorce and remarriage, and attitudes to women generally. Here Powers exp...

The Bible's ""Law and Grace"" approach is summed up in the one short saying (1 Corinthians 7:27-28, CEB.): ""If you are married, don't get a divorce. If you are divorced, don't try to find a spouse. But if you do marry, you have not sinned."" This book provides a careful and detailed presentation of these aspects of the Bible's teaching, and its application in the lives of Christians in the twenty-first century. Divorce is completely contrary to the will and purpose of God, which is: ""One man, one woman, for life."" ""For I hate divorce, says the Lord"" (Mal 2:16). This book is for all those of us who love the Lord Jesus: because this whole topic is an issue that deeply concerns every one of us, and it really matters. Is there indeed a sin we treat as a virtue? Could this possibly be true of us, of me? Yes, there is a sin we are treating as a virtue. This sin is greed—sheer plain greed. Coveting. The comfortable, respectable, sin. But the extremely dangerous and damaging sin. It is condemned by the Tenth Commandment. It is the sin Christ spoke against more often and more vehemently than any other— he warned against it in the strongest possible terms: “Beware! Take care! Watch out!” It chokes the Word of God in your life, he said. It hinders a p...
The Bible's 'Law and Grace' approach is summed up in the one short saying (1 Corinthians 7:27-28, CEB.): "If you are married, don't get a divorce. If you are divorced, don't try to find a spouse. But if you do marry, you have not sinned." This book provides a careful and detailed presentation of these aspects of the Bible's teaching, and its application in the lives of Christians in the twenty-first century. Divorce is completely contrary to the will and purpose of God, which is: "One man, one woman, for life" . "For I hate divorce, says the Lord" (Mal 2:16). But Jesus focuses our attention on the real problem: sin disrupting, damaging and ultimately destroying the marriage relationship. Do not let this happen," Jesus warns us. He says, "They are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore humans shouldn't pull apart what God has put together" (Matt 19:6//Mark 10:8-9, CEB). And to allow (or to cause) the marriage relationship to be sundered is a serious sin. But the grace of Christ can forgive sin, and restore the sinner. And in certain circumstances, as set out by Paul, the Apostle says to those who have been divorced, "they must marry" .
