Les qualités esthétiques des œuvres produites par les Bamana du Mali (aussi appelés Bambara) séduisent depuis longtemps le regard occidental. L'ouvrage présente ces objets d'art religieux tout en permettant au lecteur de retrouver leurs dimensions sociales et culturelles. En effet, toute création plastique met en action un réseau de valeurs complexes, parfois seulement accessibles à quelques initiés, mais toujours profondément ancrées dans un système de pensée et un mode de vie que seule la recherche anthropologique de terrain peut tenter d'approcher et d'étudier.
