Click Here to visit Volume I of this book. This volume continues the story of the American family started in the 18th century by John Broome and Rebecca Lloyd in New York. A street in New York City, a county in New York State, and a town in New York are named for John Broome. Volume II contains the stories of the 6th and 7th generations of the Broome family up to the 21st century; plus there are histories for multiple generations of related families. Volume II also contains the source endnotes for all of the generations of all of the families in both volumes, and the bibliography for both volumes. (Each volume has its own Index.) In addition to the Broome family, Volume II has stories of the families of Allen, Calnon, Dolan, Farley, Faulkner, Geiss, Hallowell, Judge, Keyworth, Laughlin, Livingston, Nevins, Orme, Reidy, Riley, Schereschewsky, Schilling, Schwarz, Toole, Turk, Vagliano, Valley, Velasquez, and many more; and, in Ireland, Breheny, OGara, and OHare. Broome, Latourette, and Mercereau Families of New York and Connecticut

Broome, LaTourette, and Mercereau Families of New York and Connecticut If you have a connection to Staten Island, New York, you probably have a connection to these families. The LaTourette and Mercereau families came separately to Staten Island from France in the late 17th century. They were French Huguenots who left France for religious freedom and were among the small number of early settlers on Staten Island. There were a lot of intermarriages between the LaTourette and Mercereau families and with the other Staten Island families, such as Broome, Chadrayne, Corsen, Doucinet, Lake, Poillon, and Vanderbilt. Later generations went further afield, though not very far to Manhattan Island (New York City), Long Island, upstate New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut to include Barnard, Chetwood, Fay, Gould, Jarvis, LaGrange, Phelps, Platt, and Smith. And still later, they included other families in other states. This book tells the stories of these early American settlers and their descendants. Even if you dont know of a connection to Staten Island, you may find a connection to a later descendant. And you will learn about early difficulties and successes of these pioneers.

North by South

In 1823, Richard James Arnold, descendant of a Quaker family involved in the movement to abolish slavery in Rhode Island, married Louisa Gindrat of Bryan County, Georgia, and acquired a plantation called White Hall--thirteen hundred acres of rice and cotton land and sixty-eight slaves. Over the next fifty years, Arnold led two distinct, if never entirely separate lives, building through successive Georgia winters a profitable southern "paradise" rooted in human bondage, then returning each spring to his business interests and extended family in Rhode Island. Organized around a surviving plantation journal kept during two winters and one spring, North by South encompasses Arnold's career as a rice and cotton planter as it uncovers the increasingly difficult social and moral disguises that enabled him to move freely through two worlds.
