Popular History Now and Then
The present boom in popular history is not unprecedented. The contributions to this volume investigate peaks of historical interest which favour popular approaches from around 1800 to the present. They analyse the media, genres and institutions through which historical knowledge has been disseminated - from artefacts to the archive, from poetry to photography, from music to murals, and from periodicals to popular TV series. They ask how major traditions in the popular imagery of the past have evolved and changed over time. Cultural contexts covered in the book include Western and Southern Europe, the United States and West Africa. Contributors come from a range of disciplines, including history, literary and cultural studies, musicology as well as social and cultural anthropology.

English Travel Writing From Pilgrimages To Postcolonial Explorations
Travel writing has gained new appeal, and writers from the British Isles have been particularly productive and successful in this genre. This volume provides a concise introduction to the basic characteristics and historical development of travel writing as it has emerged in the British Isles from the Middle Ages to the present day. Examples considered include many classics such as Defoe, Sterne and Smollett, Isabella Bird and Mary Kingsley, Chatwin and Raban, and also lesser known representatives. Types of travel writing discussed include pilgrims' itineraries, exploration writing, tourist accounts as well as postmodern varieties.
Travel in Victorian Periodicals, 1850-1900
This is the first study to explore the connections between the development of travel and the rapid expansion of the periodicals market in the second half of the nineteenth century in Britain. By the 1860s, travel articles had become a staple of the periodicals market and reached readers who might never have travelled far themselves or bought a travel book. This monograph demonstrates that the representation of travel in Victorian periodicals came in forms and with cultural functions that differed from book publication, and that this media-specific representation helped to inscribe travel into the Victorian lifeworld. Based on a corpus of SEVERAL general-interest periodicals targeted at different audiences, this book investigates how different readers - the family, women, young people and the working classes - engaged with travel. It argues that travel articles in periodicals performed significant cultural work because they accommodated readers to travel.

Representing Poverty in the Anglophone Postcolonial World
Originally a concern primarily of social studies and economics, poverty has emerged as a significant thematic focus and analytical tool in literary and cultural studies in the last two decades. The "new poverty studies" are dedicated to analyzing representations of poverty and the poor in literature and the visual arts, in the news media and in social practices. They aim at exploring the frameworks of representation that impact the affective and ethical responses of audiences to disenfranchised groups such as the poor. The contributions to this volume focus on representations of poverty in the Anglophone postcolonial world, exploring, for example, contemporary discourses on poverty in the UK, filmic representations of Nairobi slums or the agency of the poor in literature from India.
