India in My Eyes

India In My Eyes is a photography book that captures the poetry and colour of Barbara Macklowe's experiences during her travels in India. Photography has been a natural progression for Barbara who has owned and run a successful antiques business for over 40 years. Her eye has been trained in art and design. Her original photographs are informed by her invaluable knowledge of colour and form and by her background as a fine garden designer. What began as a pastime has become an all-encompassing life change of non-stop photographic endeavours. She has had several solo exhibitions and her work is in many private collections internationally.

Drawing from Life

A century ago it was fashionable for young women to collect and paint plants as a sort of genteel parlor skill. Some singularly talented women became professiionals, but their contributiosn to both art and botany have remained nearly invisble. The exhibition "Drawing from life" features the work of 14 women botanical artists, from the first decades of the 20th century to the present, focusing on the forgotten art of Brooklyn Botanic Garden's staff artist for 32 years, Maud H. Purdy. Side by side, these ... works reveal how established conventions of botanical art are shaped both by fashions of the times and individual artistic visions. Paintings, scientific illustrations, herbarium specimens, preparatory sketches, and objects of material culture explore the boundaries between art, science and craft and invite us to see plants with fresh eyes."--Back cover

Art Nouveau

Rarely has a subject been served by a book of this stature. Five years in the making, it covers all aspects of Art Nouveau in France in 624 authoritative pages and 740 illustrations. Arwas traces the evolution of the movement as it developed, primarily in Nancy and Paris, with the help of carefully chosen illustrations, many never published before. Ranging from the 1900 Paris exhibition to paintings, graphics and posters and such collecting fields as furniture, jewellery, ceramics, book bindings and sculpture, the informative, witty text ranges over architecture, haute couture, and the role of women in Art Nouveau with a particular look at such theatrical icons as Sarah Bernhardt, Loïe Fuller and the Grandes Horizontales. Destined to become the standard book on the subject, both content and design will appeal widely to the connoisseur, the specialist and the collector, as well as to the novice who will be introduced to the magical wonders of the style.

Public Parks, Private Gardens

  • Categories: Art

The spectacular transformation of Paris during the 19th century into a city of tree-lined boulevards and public parks both redesigned the capital and inspired the era’s great Impressionist artists. The renewed landscape gave crowded, displaced urban dwellers green spaces to enjoy, while suburbanites and country-dwellers began cultivating their own flower gardens. As public engagement with gardening grew, artists increasingly featured flowers and parks in their work. Public Parks, Private Gardens includes masterworks by artists such as Bonnard, Cassatt, Cézanne, Corot, Daumier, Van Gogh, Manet, Matisse, Monet, and Seurat. Many of these artists were themselves avid gardeners, and they painted parks and gardens as the distinctive scenery of contemporary life. Writing from the perspective of both a distinguished art historian and a trained landscape designer, Colta Ives provides new insights not only into these essential works, but also into this extraordinarily creative period in France’s history.

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana} At the height of the Arts and Crafts era in Europe and the United States, American ceramics were transformed from industrially produced ornamental works to handcrafted art pottery. Celebrated ceramists such as George E. Ohr, Hugh C. Robertson, and M. Louise McLaughlin, and prize-winning potteries, including Grueby and Rookwood, harnessed the potential of the medium to create an astonishing range of dynamic forms and experimental glazes. Spanning the period from the 1870s to the 1950s, this volume chronicles the history of American art pottery through more than three hundred works in the outstanding collection of Robert A.
