Nineteenth-century American Art

  • Categories: Art

"Many well-known artists, including Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, and lesser-known artists like Harriet Hosmer are closely examined, as is the art world of the time. In addition to discussing the free movement of American visual culture between 'high' and 'low', Barbara Groseclose interweaves nineteenth-century art criticism with current art history, to create a fascinating insight into the changing interpretations of American art of this period."--BOOK JACKET.

British Sculpture and the Company Raj

"The British Raj (a Sanskrit-based word meaning dominion or empire), which has taken on a wholly Victorian flavor as a result of popular films and books, actually began in piecemeal fashion when the East India Company developed settlements in Madras, Calcutta, and Bombay during the seventeenth century. As these small enclaves grew into cities, the British tried hard to give them the look and feel of the country they had left behind." "Barbara Groseclose examines British public statuary and church monuments in India from the standpoint of its function in regard to the British themselves. Arguing that doubts and anxieties, as well as assumptions about their own place in Indian life, bear stron...

No Better Friend?

The German-American relationship is the decisive transatlantic dynamic of our time. Long seen as one of the most stable connections between Europe and America thanks to its well-defined Cold War structure and hierarchy, relations between Washington and Berlin have become much more volatile in the twenty-first century— and are playing an increasingly pivotal role in determining the degree to which Europe and the United States will be able to shape a rapidly changing world order. Stabilising this uniquely complicated relationship will be no easy feat. At times more closely aligned politically, and more intertwined economically, than any other transatlantic pair, since the end of the Cold War...

The art of Julian Scott (1846ndash;1901) is admired by historians and critics alike for its authenticity and for his attention to detail. His paintings and drawings came directly from his own experiences; he was a Civil War hero whose earliest recorded actions include the saving of nine soldiers and the capture of a Confederate officer, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. He also took part in the Indian census of 1890 and witnessed firsthand the demise of the old, Native American, West. This first-ever biography of Scott focuses on how his experiences were reflected in his art, from the oil paintings of Civil War soldiers in the field to pencil sketches of Native Americans. There are almost 100 reproductions, some in color.
