L'ottantesimo compleanno ha segnato per Raffaele La Capria l'inizio di una rinnovata, fertilissima stagione letteraria, ricca sia di fulminee improvvisazioni sia di lenti echi della memoria. Ne sono testimonianza i libri qui raccolti. Diario scritto nel corso del 2003, L'estro quotidiano è un testo vibrante di malinconia e gioia, pieno di incontri, amicizie, amori. Il mondo degli affetti domina anche nelle tre lettere che compongono L'amorosa inchiesta, indirizzate al primo amore, alla figlia e al padre. Lo sguardo sincero, indagatore su se stesso e sul proprio mondo, si ritrova in A cuore aperto, il memoir in cui lo scrittore racconta l'infarto che lo colpì nel 2006. Come dimostrano questi libri, tre piccoli gioielli, La Capria non solo non perde vitalità né smussa la vena ironica, ma sente sempre più urgente il bisogno di rivolgersi a un interlocutore "guardandolo negli occhi", scavando nella memoria e raccontando di sé e del mondo con la leggerezza propria di chi, per dirla con Pasolini, "ha saputo estrarre dalla vita quotidiana le ragioni del cosmo".
