This second volume of letters by and about the Stanley of Alderley family written in the middle of the last century ranges more widely than its predecessor, The ladies of Alderley, but Miss Mitford's comment on the first applies equally to its successor: 'it is a picture of a world past and gone ... an extraordinarily clear and detailed picture of real people, carefully drawn'.
