The Modern Singing Master

A compilation of essays written by renowned singing teachers as their testament to their great singing instructor, whose research and interpretations have given birth to a new era of vocal pedagogy known as 'Functional Voice Training.' The essays explain the four basic principles with which he works: the two-register theory, the necessity for pure vowels, the use of rhythm to encourage the muscles to react spontaneously, and the choice of dynamic.

Breathing, Speech, and Song

I have attempted to prepare this volume in such a way as to provide a source of information on the normal physiology of speech and song as well as on the disorders of those functions. To the extent that I have succeeded it should be of interest to physiologists, physicians, and teachers and students of the VOlce. The book is by no means a text on laryngology, nor is it a treatise on the physiology of breathing mechanics, nor yet is it a manual telling how to teach or learn voice production. If none of these, what is it? It is a discussion of the application of breathing mechanics to phonation of interest to the respir- atory physiologist, of certain aspects of physiology and medicine of inte...

Bel Canto

In this well documented and highly readable book, James Stark provides a history of vocal pedagogy from the beginning of the bel canto tradition of solo singing in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries to the present. Using a nineteenth-century treatise by Manuel Garcia as his point of reference, Stark analyses the many sources that discuss singing techniques and selects a number of primary vocal 'problems' for detailed investigation. He also presents data from a series of laboratory experiments carried out to demonstrate the techniques of bel canto. The discussion deals extensively with such topics as the emergence of virtuoso singing, the castrato phenomenon, national differences in singing styles, controversies regarding the perennial decline in the art of singing, and the so-called secrets of bel canto. Stark offers a new definition of bel canto which reconciles historical and scientific descriptions of good singing. His is a refreshing and profound discussion of issues important to all singers and voice teachers.

Becoming Fully Human in an Inhuman World

This book balances biblical content with practical application about the what, why, and how of spiritual formation. It is an excellent source for individuals, small groups and entire congregations to study and apply in order to bridge the gap between numerical growth and spiritual immaturity among many members. It goes beyond most books on spiritual formation by beginning with the nature of the Triune God, who has always existed in community, moves to the nature of humanity created in His image and likeness, and how individuals can mature to functionally relate as God does. Three appendixes include relevant pondering questions for each chapter, an eleven-week program for spiritual formation, and a comprehensive assessment tool for measuring progress. It is biblical, practical, understandable, and usable.

Musculoskeletal Medicine

Neck and back pain are common symptoms which vary from the trivial to the incapacitating. Conventional medical textbooks concentrate disproportion ately on those causes which have clear-cut diagnostic patterns and pathological features demonstrable by investigations. Discussions of treatment often overemphasize the importance of the tiny minority of patients who proceed to surgery. Real life is very different. The majority of patients who consult their general practitioners do not suffer from readily categorized diseases, have no diagnostic investigational signs, and often respond to treatment in no other way than that expected from the passage of time. It is not surprising that such a situa...

Behavioral and Psychological Approaches to Breathing Disorders

We start life with a breath, and the process continues automatically for the rest of our lives. Because breathing continues on its own, without our awareness, it does not necessarily mean that it is always functioning for optimum mental and physical health. The opposite is true often. The problem with breathing is that it seems so easy and natural that we rarely give it a second thought. We breathe: we inhale, we exhale. What could be simpler? But behind that simple act lies a process that affects us profoundly. It affects the way we think and feel, the quality of what we create, and how we function in our daily life. Breathing affects our psychological and physiological states, while our ps...

Voice, Speech, and Language in the Child: Development and Disorder

This volume is one in a series of monographs being issued under the general title of "Disorders of Human Communication". Each monograph deals in detail with a particular aspect of vocal communication and its disorders, and is written by internationally distinguished experts. Therefore, the series will provide an authoritative source of up-to-date scientific and clinical informa tion relating to the whole field of normal and abnormal speech communication, and as such will succeed the earlier monumental work "Handbuch der Stimm und Sprachheilkunde" by R. Luchsinger and G. E. Arnold (last issued in 1970). This series will prove invaluable for clinicians, teachers and research workers in phoniat...
