The Jewish Community of Golders Green

The first Jews settled in Golders Green just before the First World War, and by 1930 the suburb had been recognised for its significant Jewish community. By 1960 the Jewish population of Golders Green had tripled. A century after the arrival of the first Jewish families, the community remains very diverse and is growing rapidly. Golders Green is now the most Jewishly populous neighbourhood in the country. Despite its prominence and its vibrancy, the Jewish Community of Golders Green have not been the subject of a detailed historical study. This book addresses this oversight and – based to a significant extent on the memories and knowledge of the community – fills an important gap in Anglo-Jewish history.

Israel and the Diaspora: Jewish Connectivity in a Changing World

This collected volume is based on the proceedings of a symposium held in 2018 at York University, Canada, which was held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Israel. This symposium highlighted contemporary Jewish identity, Israel-Diaspora relations, and how Jewish life has been transformed in light of various types of antisemitism. The book considers the diasporic Jewish experiences through examining the intersections between various Jewish communities sociologically, historically, and geographically. The text covers world Jewry in general, and each of the diaspora and Israeli Jewries more specifically in the context of mutual responsibility, but also focuses on areas of tension concerning...

Part of a large study of diaspora Jews worldwide in comparison with those in Israel, based on Daniel Elazer's People and Polity: The Organizational Dynamics of World Jewry (1989). Levine (politics, Victoria U. of Wellington) does not, therefore, offer either a history of Jews in New Zealand nor an anecdotal account of their experience, but an analysis that follows Elazer's data, approach, and arrangement so it can be compared with analogous studies of other countries. The topics are Jewish commitment, organizational structure, religion, education, culture, welfare and defense, Israel and world Jewry, constitutional documents, and future prospects.
