Two Esoteric Sutras
This volume contains The Adamantine Pinnacle Sutra and The Susiddhikara Sutra, two important texts in the corpus of Buddhist Tantric literature. These texts include a general introduction in the conventional format of Buddhist scriptures and a supplementary introduction that describes the nature of Mahavairocana, equatable with the Dharma-body, first primarily from the perspective of his aspect as the essence of the Sixteen Bodhisattvas in the Dharma, Great, and Samaya Mandalas, and then in his capacity as the essence of the Dharma-realm. The body describes the samadhis characteristic of the Yoga Tantras, an exposition of the rites of initiation, a description of the rites to be performed by the teacher in the mandala, the manner in which he is to initiate the disciple, and how the disciple is to obtain various types of "success" and "seal-knowledge" required for performing rituals associated with the Great Mandala "Adamantine Realm", along with miscellaneous rules.
Tiantai Lotus Texts
This volume contains four important texts in the Tiantai Lotus tradition: The Infinite Meanings Sutra, composed as an introduction to the Lotus Sutra, and The Sutra Expounded by the Buddha on the Practice of the Way through Contemplation of Bodhisattva All-embracing Goodness are part of the so-called Threefold Lotus Sutra. The Commentary on the Lotus Sutra is a translation of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra-upadeśa (Jpn. Myōhorengekyō upadaisha), a commentary on the Lotus Sutra attributed to the eminent Buddhist philosopher Vasubandhu. A Guide to the Tiantai Fourfold Teachings is a translation of a tenth-century text by the Korean monk Chegwan that presents an introduction to the teachings of Zhiyi (538-597), founder of the Tiantai tradition.
Treasury of the True Dharma Eye

Kaimokusho or Liberation from Blindness
This thirteenth-century text by Nichiren extols the Lotus Sutra and critiques the other schools of Japanese Buddhism active at that time. Nichiren was arrested by the Kamakura government in 1271 and sentenced to exile on Sado Island. There he was in constant danger of assassination, and wrote the Kaimokusho to convince his remaining followers to follow his example in Buddhism. To do this, Nichiren criticized religions other than Buddhism, and then Buddhist sutras other than the Lotus Sutra. He asked the question "Am I not the practitioner of the Lotus Sutra and answered this question by quoting five testimonies to the truthfulness of his faith. He also identifies the three kinds of arrogant people and equates them with the three kinds of enemies of the Lotus Sutra.
Three Texts on Consciousness Only
This volume comprises three important texts of the Yogacara school. Demonstration of Consciousness Only is a translation of Vasubandhu's "Thirty Verses" plus the interpretation of Dharmapala as the ultimately correct view of the text, with the supplementation of two or three divergent interpretations. Buddhist Monastic Traditions of Southern Asia
As a source of information, the monk Yijing's Record of the Inner Law Sent Home from the South Seas contains ample materials concerning monastic life, from the choosing of a teacher, under whose guidance one becomes a monk, up to the disposal of the personal belongings left by a deceased monk. It depicts such a complete picture of the life of a monk that it is indispensable and invaluable for research into the conditions of Buddhist monasticism in medieval India. It also provides some insights into Chinese monastic life through Yijing's criticism and comparison of the practices of the two regions.
Buddhacarita in Praise of Buddha's Acts
The Buddhacarita: In Praise of Buddha's Acts is a complete biography of Sakyamuni, from his birth until after his death (parinirvana), when his relics were distributed. Composed by Asvaghosa (early second century CE) the text was rendered into Chinese by Baoyun in 421 CE from the original Sanskrit, creating a simplified version that would be more easily understandable to a Chinese audience. The Buddhacarita reads like a play, describing the incidents and events of the Buddha's life story, from his miraculous birth and early life of wealth and privilege as Crown Prince Siddhartha, to his spiritual journeying and eventual attainment of enlightenment and the teaching and conversion of disciples and followers. Along the way key elements of the Buddha's teaching are revealed and the message of his life is an example of the possibility of awakening and liberation for all.
Summary of the Great Vehicle, The
The Summary of the Great Vehicle is perhaps the most representative text of the Yogacara school of Mahayana Buddhism. It presents the classic argument for the basic Yogacara themes on conscious interiority, attempting to reinterpret within this context the general Mahayana teachings of emptiness and dependent co-arising. It then proceeds to explain the etiology if imaginative illusion, sketch its reversal by offering an explanation of the nature of conversion, champion the recovered insight into depended co-arising in terms of the converted other-dependent pattern of consciousness, and thus allow for a valid, if limited, role for language-formed, conventional discourse, both commonsense and theoretical.
Canonical Book of the Buddha's Lengthy Discourses, The I
The Chan ahan jingis a translation of the Dirgha Agama done in the fifth century, and was intended to bridge the early Buddhist teachings with the Mahayana Buddhist teachings and scriptures. This is the first in a series of volumes translating The Canonical Book of the Buddha's Lengthy Discourses (Taisho 1). Volume 1 contains sutras 1-10 (of 30). Translations of the remaining sutras will be published in two subsequent volumes.
