Bastards and Believers

A formidable collection of studies on religious conversion and converts in Jewish history Theodor Dunkelgrün and Pawel Maciejko observe that the term "conversion" is profoundly polysemous. It can refer to Jews who turn to religions other than Judaism and non-Jews who tie their fates to that of Jewish people. It can be used to talk about Christians becoming Muslim (or vice versa), Christians "born again," or premodern efforts to Christianize (or Islamize) indigenous populations of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It can even describe how modern, secular people discover spiritual creeds and join religious communities. Viewing Jewish history from the perspective of conversion across a broad chr...

Expert Systems Research Trends

An expert system, also known as a knowledge based system, is a computer program that contains some of the subject-specific knowledge of one or more human experts. This class of program was first developed by researchers in artificial intelligence during the 1960s and 1970s and applied commercially throughout the 1980s. The most common form of expert systems is a program made up of a set of rules that analyse information usually supplied by the user of the system) about a specific class of problems, as well as providing mathematical analysis of the problem(s), and, depending upon their design, recommend a course of user action in order to implement corrections. It is a system that utilises what appear to be reasoning capabilities to reach conclusions. This book presents important research on in this dynamic field.

Current Topics in Artificial Intelligence

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th Conference of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence, CAEPIA 2007, held in Salamanca, Spain, in November 2007, in conjunction with the 7th Workshop on Artificial Intelligence Technology Transfer, TTIA 2007. The 28 revised full papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from 134 submissions. The papers address all current issues of artificial intelligence ranging from methodological and foundational aspects to advanced applications in various fields.

This book collects the abstracts of the contributions presented at AGOP 2017, the 9th International Summer School on Aggregation Operators. The conference took place in Skövde (Sweden) in June 2017. Contributions include works from theory and fundamentals of aggregation functions to their use in applications. Aggregation functions are usually defined as those functions that are monotonic and that satisfy the unanimity condition. In particular settings these conditions are relaxed. Aggregation functions are used for data fusion and decision making. Examples of these functions include means, t-norms and t-conorms, copulas and fuzzy integrals (e.g., the Choquet and Sugeno integrals).

Honorable Mention, Bandelier/Lavrin Book Award in Colonial Latin America, Rocky Mountain Council on Latin American Studies (RMCLAS), 2019 Honorable Mention, The Alfred B. Thomas Book Award, Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS), 2019 Scholars have written reams on the conquest of Mexico, from the grand designs of kings, viceroys, conquistadors, and inquisitors to the myriad ways that indigenous peoples contested imperial authority. But the actual work of establishing the Spanish empire in Mexico fell to a host of local agents—magistrates, bureaucrats, parish priests, ranchers, miners, sugar producers, and many others—who knew little and cared less about the goals of th...

Cases in Field Epidemiology: A Global Perspective

This collection of case studies—some never before published—uncover the details of actual disease outbreaks from within the United States and around the world. At the conclusion of each chapter, the investigator reviews the methods and processes that were employed to execute the investigation. Ideal as a complement to any text on infectious disease epidemiology, these case studies will bring to life the classic functions of field epidemiology and the application of epidemiological methods to unexpected health problems that require fast, on-site investigation and timely intervention. The cases cover investigations in infectious and non-infectious disease outbreaks, as well as environmental health related disease outbreaks.

Hybrid Artificial Intelligence Systems

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Hybrid Artificial Intelligence Systems, HAIS 2008, held in Burgos, Spain, during September 24-26, 2008. The 93 papers presented, together with 4 invited talks, were carefully reviewed and selected from 280 submissions. The topics covered are agents and multi-agent systems; evolutionary computation; connectionist models; optimization sysetms; fuzzy logic systems; classification and classifiers; cluster analysis; video and image analysis; learning systems, algorithms and applications; hybrid systems based on negotiation and social network modelling; real world applications of HAIS under uncertainty; hybrid intelligent systems for multi-robot and multi-agent systems; applications of hybrid artificial intelligence in bioinformatics; and novel approaches to genetic fuzzy systems.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has started the evolution in computer science. It is in good health, as many companies qualify their novelties as ‘smart’ or ‘intelligent’. The term ‘society of knowledge’ draws society nearer to the future and is a symbol of breakthrough. From this perspective, AI has reached maturity and has exploded into an endless set of sub-areas, getting in touch with all other disciplines, such as situation assessment, analysis and interpretation of music, management of environmental and biological systems, planning trains, routing of communication networks, assisting medical diagnosis or powering auctions. The wide variety of Artificial Intelligence applicatio...
