In this paper, the nonsharp split and its effect to the synthesis of multicomponent distillation configurations are investigated. For any zeotropic mixture with N-component, two kinds of nonsharp splits can be introduced in a separation sequence, namely the symmetric nonsharp split which is fully sloppy split of the middle components, and the asymmetric split which is partially sloppy split of the middle components. First, with intended sharp and nonsharp splits, different distinct separation sequences can be formulated for a multicomponent distillation. For the distinct separation sequences, different ways to deal with the condensers and reboilers associated with submixtures of middle compo...

Bioethanol has been considered as a green fuel and a valid alternative to reduce the dependence on fossil distillates. The development of an optimal separation process is considered as a key element in the design of an efficient process able to be cost effective and competitive. Despite many separation techniques are today available, distillation is up to now the frontrunner technology in most of the plants. In particular extractive distillation is considered as an energy efficient method to produce pure ethanol overcoming the purity limitations imposed by the water-ethanol azeotrope. The subspace of simple distillation configurations was generated considering the possibility to employ parti...

In this work, to understand the separation behavior of the flash column chromatography during purification of artemisinin from the crude extract of Artemisia annua, multivariate data analysis technique PARAFAC (Parallel factorization) is used to mine the relevant chemical information from analytical chromatograms of 9 artemisinin containing fractions. The size of three way dataset obtained from chromatogram measurements in sample, retention time, and spectral mode is 9 × 1981 × 82. Prior to the application of PARAFAC, the dataset is preprocessed to remove baseline drift and peak misalignment caused by retention time shifts due to matrix effects. Due to the complicated nature of chromatogra...

This book contains 182 papers presented at the 12th Symposium of Computer Aided Process Engineering (ESCAPE-12), held in The Hague, The Netherlands, May 26-29, 2002. The objective of ESCAPE-12 is to highlight advances made in the development and use of computing methodologies and information technology in the area of Computer Aided Process Engineering and Process Systems Engineering. The Symposium addressed six themes: (1) Integrated Product&Process Design; (2) Process Synthesis & Plant Design; (3) Process Dynamics & Control; (4) Manufacturing & Process Operations; (5) Computational Technologies; (6) Sustainable CAPE Education and Careers for Chemical Engineers. These themes cover the traditional core activities of CAPE, and also some wider conceptual perspectives, such as the increasing interplay between product and process design arising from the often complex internal structures of modern products; the integration of production chains creating the network structure of the process industry and optimization over life span dimensions, taking sustainability as the ultimate driver.

This book includes papers presented at ESCAPE-10, the 10th European Symposium on Computer Aided Process -Engineering, held in Florence, Italy, 7-10th May, 2000. The scientific program reflected two complementary strategic objectives of the 'Computer Aided Process Engineering' (CAPE) Working Party: one checked the status of historically consolidated topics by means of their industrial application and their emerging issues, while the other was addressed to opening new windows to the CAPE audience by inviting adjacent Working Parties to co-operate in the creation of the technical program. The former CAPE strategic objective was covered by the topics: Numerical Methods, Process Design and Synthe...

This book will provide researchers and graduate students with an overview of the recent developments and applications of process intensification in chemical engineering. It will also allow the readers to apply the available intensification techniques to their processes and specific problems. The content of this book can be readily adopted as part of special courses on process control, design, optimization and modelling aimed at senior undergraduate and graduate students. This book will be a useful resource for researchers in process system engineering as well as for practitioners interested in applying process intensification approaches to real-life problems in chemical engineering and related areas.
