This book features a collection of 10 interviews with Christian M.I.M. Matthiessen, who is a key figure in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and has collaborated closely with M.A.K. Halliday since the 1980s. As noted by Professor Chang Chenguang, Editor of the M.A.K. Halliday Library Functional Linguistics Series, “this collection of interviews serves as an important reference for scholars and students of SFL. It provides a unique perspective on the theoretical development and future outlooks of SFL, as well as Matthiessen’s own interpretations of the theory. It also enriches our understanding of SFL and is a very useful addition to the series.” Written in an engaging dialogic format, the book paints a vivid picture of SFL thriving among the landscape of general linguistics and of SFL as an important tool now being applied in various areas.

This book constitutes the strictly refereed post-workshop documentation of the ECAI'96 Workshop on Dialogue Processing in Spoken Language Systems, held in Budapest, Hungary, in August 1996, during ECAI'96. The volume presents 16 revised full papers including a detailed introduction and survey paper by the volume editors. The papers are organized in sections on foundations of spoken language dialogue systems, dialogue systems and prosodic aspects of spoken dialogue processing, spoken dialogue systems-design and implementation, and evaluation of systems. The book reports on work being pursued both in academia and in industry as a crucial issue in speech processing.
"This book investigates the relationship between the "New Negro" moment of the early twentieth-century America and the Old World of Europe, as represented in James Weldon Johnson's The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (1912), Jessie Fauset's There Is Confusion (1924), and Nella Larsen's Quicksand (1928). The episodes set in Europe form a lens through which the role of the African American in Western civilization can be studied. The African-American artist/protagonists are seen as cultural intermediaries, who bridge Euro-American and African-American culture, national and folk culture, high and low culture. This study suggests that in the novels of Johnson, Fauset, and Larsen, the trope of performance (based on double consciousness) is used to critique the notions of race and culture, whereby conceptions of racial essentialism and cultural authenticity are questioned. The novels themselves are also considered as performative acts that helped form the concept of a "New Negro" in the 1920s."--BOOK JACKET.
The twenty papers of this volume - published to honour Gunnel Tottie - are of interest to everyone concerned with the study of the English language. The collection is a convincing argument for an approach to language studies based on the analysis of computerized corpora. Though this is not an introduction to the field but a series of highly specialized studies, readers get a good overview of the work being done at present in English computer corpus studies. English corpus linguistics, though basically concerned with the study of varieties of English, goes far beyond the simple ordering and counting of large numbers of examples but is deeply concerned with linguistic theory - based on real language data. The volume includes sections on corpora of written and spoken present-day English, historical corpora, contrastive corpora, and on the application of corpus studies to teaching purposes.
