No dia 1º de abril de 1964, depois das tropas do General Mourão Filho terem marchado de Minas Gerais para o Rio de Janeiro e derrubado o presidente João Goulart, o deputado estadual Afonso Celso Nogueira Monteiro discursou nas escadarias da Assembleia Legislativa do Rio, no Centro de Niterói, então capital fluminense. Era o começo da resistência na cidade ao recém-instaurado golpe militar, deflagrado na véspera. Depois, o parlamentar foi preso e torturado. O Ginásio Caio Martins, em Icaraí, foi o primeiro estádio nas Américas usado como presídio político. Militantes de esquerda, professores, estudantes e qualquer pessoa suspeita de atividade subversiva começaram a ser perseguidos, presos e torturados na Cidade Sorriso. The book highlights the history of the State of Rio de Janeiro as a center of learning and research, enhancing the production of its 150 scientific and technological institutions, the architecture and urban development and extensive documentary photography. The texts account for the history of the first scientific academy (1771), the Escola Politécnica (1874) and the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (IME). Also present in the book, the inaugurations of two astronomical observatories and the Municipal Soroterápico Institute, which was the origin of the Fundaçao Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ), as well as local academies, universities and other public instances of science. Includes texts on the formation of the Brazilian Society of Science, in 1919 and the University of Brazil (now UFRJ), in 1920. The botanical gardens, the Royal Museum and the National Library are some of many other scientific institutions remembered.
