POSTMODERNISM AND AESTHETICS: COLLIDE OR STEER?
Postmodernism and Aesthetics: Collide or Steer presents twenty-two artists who were awardees of the contemporary visual art competition by the AHL Foundation. All of them spent their youth in the 1990s as immigrant artists or as fine art students studying-abroad in the United States. While postmodernism gained momentum in South Korea during an economic boom in the 1990s, a milieu of fine arts departments at major universities as well as art markets in Seoul, still maintained a purity of high modernism in abstract painting. Organized by curator and professor Kyunghee Pyun at the Fashion Institute of Technology, this exhibition overviews the current status of twenty-two artists from Korea living and working in the United States. The show divided artists and their works into most popular binary themes of postmodernism and high modernism such as appropriation/originality; local/ international; simulacra/real; banal/avant-garde; and personal/universal.
Contemporary Feminist Art by Women in North Africa
Contemporary Feminist Art by Women in North Africa: Body Talks dissects the diverse perceptions of the body and how it becomes symbolically charged in the artwork of six contemporary Maghrebi female artists: Majida Khattari, Lalla Essaydi, Zoulikha Bouabdellah, Déborah Benzaquen, Fatima Mazmouz and Zaïnab Fasiki. With a focus on the French, Maghrebi, and North American market and examining artistic mediums ranging from painting and photography to videos and installations, Ramona Mielusel highlights how the body functions as both subject and object of aesthetic discourse. The author denotes these artistic works as the intersection of the intimate and the impersonal, of the individual perception and the communitarian and societal view, without promoting a fixed notion of the body in a specific spatiality and temporality. This book explores the work of female Maghrebi artists and their intentional framing of the body’s duality between the symbolic and the real, between cultural interpretation of the body in literature and the actual perception of the body.
Globalizing the Avant-Garde
How has the process of globalization shaped artistic practices on the one hand, and art history and theory on the other? The contributions in this volume approach this question from a range of perspectives, taking into account the role of travel, for example, or practitioners’ increasing knowledge of other cultures, art’s increasing awareness of itself as existing on a global level, literary translation, the advance of technology, and the ever-changing grand narratives of art history. As well as reflections on European avant-gardes and neo-avant-gardes, the collection features discussions of Japan, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. As a whole, the volume engages with broader current discourses about cultural globalization, and features input from leading scholars around the world as well as some important novel interventions by early-career researchers. The authors not only make a major contribution to the evolution of avant-garde studies, but also offer valuable, original points of view to art history and to the cultural theory of globalization more broadly.

An ethnographic account of daily life in Durham Cathedral, this book examines the processes of negotiation and change between a community and their cathedral. Focusing on the role of sound, light, time, space, building and dwelling, the author argues that Durham Cathedral is much more than just a backdrop to everyday life. Rather, through the constant processes of negotiation and change, it is a fully engaged participant in the daily lives of those who use Durham Cathedral. As such, it is not a place in which life happens, but a place with which life happens.

The book highlights facets of people's experiences since the 19th century with Atlantic space and the design of their stay on board ships. The contributions range from the perspective of pleasure-seeking tourists, who used ships as a temporary, luxurious homes to the perspective of military personnel, who perceived the Atlantic Passage as a transition between homeland security and potentially dangerous professional operations - the risks of sea voyages even on technically sophisticated ocean liners, whose interiors and services often include grand hotels in the metropolises of the late 19th and 20th century, were discreetly ignored by the passengers. The charm of the Atlantic and the ship, unthinkable in earlier times, should not be decimated in any way.
