Fertility Control — Update and Trends

The name of Benno Runnebaum is closely tied to the status of gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine and so it seemed appropriate to dedicate this conference book entitled "Fertility Control" to him in recognition of his achievements. His clinical and research work is reflected in more than 450 original scientific publications and many young scientists and doctors from home and abroad have received their further clinical and scientific training in his department. With this volume we would all like to thank Professor Runnebaum as a mentor and friend for his achievements in the field of gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine.

Contraceptives have always provided ground for controversy. This book describes and discusses latest findings concerning the advantages as well as hazard and risk factors of contraception. The clinical impact of oral contraceptives on metabolism is particularly highlighted. Last, but not least, the book summarizes the complex ethical, religious and political aspects of family planning and contraception.

Manual on Assisted Reproduction

Our knowledge of reproductive medicine has expanded rapidly since the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby to be conceived by in vitro fertilization, which was performed by Professors Steptoe and Ed wards in Bourn Hall, England, in 1978. Hardly a year goes by without the development of a new or the modification of an existing method of assisted reproduction. Within a relatively short period, in vitro fertilization has been introduced into the treatment of female infertility. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection has also created new opportunities for the treatment of male infertility. This manual takes stock of the techniques of assisted reproduc tion that are available today. Competent authors ...

Estrogen Effects in Psychiatric Disorders

A number of studies, mostly focusing on estrogen replacement therapy in women, have reported beneficial actions of these hormones on various neurobiological and neuropathological parameters in health and disease. Recent research has focused on gender differences and there is increasing evidence that estrogens exert protective effects in schizophrenia. Hormonal fluctuations or lack of estrogen may increase the risk of depression among vulnerable women. Treatment of depression with estrogen may stabilize and restore disrupted homeostasis – as during post-partum, premenstrual, or perimenopausal conditions – and act as a psychomodulator to offset vulnerability to dysphoric mood when estrogen levels are significantly decreased, as in the case of postmenopausal women. Studies on the effect of estrogens on Alzheimer’s Disease are still rather controversial, they do, however, facilitate the hypothesis that estrogens may have a modifying effect on the onset and course of AD, at least in subgroups of patients.
