Sometimes milestones in the evolution of the DAGM Symposium become immediately visible. The Technical Committee decided to publish the symposium proceedings completely in English. As a consequence we successfully negotiated with Springer Verlag to publish in the international well accepted series “Lecture Notes in Computer Science”. The quality of the contributions convinced the editors and the lectors. Thanks to them and to the authors. We received 105 acceptable, good, and even excellent manuscripts. Plan-Based Control of Robotic Agents
Robotic agents, such as autonomous office couriers or robot tourguides, must be both reliable and efficient. Thus, they have to flexibly interleave their tasks, exploit opportunities, quickly plan their course of action, and, if necessary, revise their intended activities. This book makes three major contributions to improving the capabilities of robotic agents: - first, a plan representation method is introduced which allows for specifying flexible and reliable behavior - second, probabilistic hybrid action models are presented as a realistic causal model for predicting the behavior generated by modern concurrent percept-driven robot plans - third, the system XFRMLEARN capable of learning structured symbolic navigation plans is described in detail.
Pattern Recognition
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 26th Symposium of the German Association for Pattern Recognition, DAGM 2004, held in Tbingen, Germany in August/September 2004. The 22 revised papers and 48 revised poster papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 146 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on learning, Bayesian approaches, vision and faces, vision and motion, biologically motivated approaches, segmentation, object recognition, and object recognition and synthesis.

We are proud to present the DAGM 2002 proceedings, which are the result of the e?orts of many people. First, there are the many authors, who have submitted so many excellent cont- butions. We received more than 140 papers, of which we could only accept about half in order not to overload the program. Only about one in seven submitted papers could be delivered as an oral presentation, for the same reason. But it needs to be said that almost all submissions were of a really high quality. This book constitutes the research papers presented at the Joint 2101 & 2102 International Conference on Biometric ID Management and Multimodal Communication. BioID_MultiComm'09 is a joint International Conference organized cooperatively by COST Actions 2101 & 2102. COST 2101 Action is focused on 'Biometrics for Identity Documents and Smart Cards (BIDS)', while COST 2102 Action is entitled 'Cross-Modal Analysis of Verbal and Non-verbal Communication'. The aim of COST 2101 is to investigate novel technologies for unsupervised multimodal biometric authentication systems using a new generation of biometrics-enabled identity documents and smart cards. COST 2102 is devoted to develop an advanced acoustical, perceptual and psychological analysis of verbal and non-verbal communication signals originating in spontaneous face-to-face interaction, in order to identify algorithms and automatic procedures capable of recognizing human emotional states.

A great number of scientists in European research institutions is involved in one or more aspects of the multidisciplinary field of signal processing. This book contains concise descriptions of the activities and interests of 379 signal proces sing laboratories from 17 European countries. Its purpose is twofold: to facilitate communications between institutions and individual scientists within the signal pro cessing community - and to give an expose of the combined European signal processing research effort. This publication is the result of a survey which was made in the fall of 1983 by the European Association for Signal Processing EURASIP. EURASIP is a non-profit professional organization which aims at the improvement of communications between groups and individuals working in the field of signal pro cessing in Europe or elsewhere, and to exchange and disseminate information in the field allover the world. EURASIP arranges workshops and conferences, e.g., the European Signal Processing Conferences EUSIPCO, and publishes the journals SIGNAL PROCESSING and SPEECH COMMUNICATION.
