Discovering the Ice Ages
Tobias Krüger explores the discovery of the Ice Ages, how the idea was received, and what further research it stimulated. The approach used in Discovering the Ice Ages is uniquely sweeping. The contemporary debates on the subject are compared from an international perspective. Krüger retraces the arguments advanced from the middle of the 18th century to the threshold of the 20th century. The positions held by defenders of the glacial theory as well as those by its most important opponents are set within the context of the then current understanding of geology. In an interdisciplinary overview Krüger then focuses on the impetus gained from early ice-age research. The most prominent examples worth mentioning are the discovery of trace gases and the greenhouse effect.

The God Debaters
This book examines the post-9/11 God debate in the West. Through a close study of prominent English God debaters Richard Dawkins, Karen Armstrong, Christopher Hitchens, and Terry Eagleton, Adrian Rosenfeldt demonstrates that New Atheist and religious apologist ideas and arguments about God, science, and identity are driven by mythic autobiographical narratives and Protestant or Catholic cultural heritage. This study is informed by criticism of the New Atheist polemic as being positivistic, and the religious apologists as propagating “sophisticated theology.” In both cases, the God debaters are perceived as disassociating themselves from human lived experience. It is through reconnecting the God debaters’ intellectual ideas to their cultural and social background that the God debate can be grounded in a recognisable human reality that eludes reductive distinctions and disembodied abstractions.
Music, Narrative and the Moving Image
In extending the traditional field of Word and Music Studies to include research on film and other forms of moving visualizations, this volume focuses on innovative discussions of artistic works showing relationships between three individual communicative media. This trifocal, interdisciplinary perspective is reflected in seventeen essays that cover the historical space from the 19th to the 21st centuries and discuss a wide variety of individual genres in the represented media. These range from Parisian cabaret to ‘revolutionary’ Peking opera, from silent film to Holocaust narration, from documentary propaganda movies to opera film interludes, and more. The investigation of historical cases is broadened by reflections on theoretical and functional issues, primarily in film music, which show a remarkable breadth of technical and perceptual varieties. The essays here collected are of relevance to scholars and students of film studies, musicology, and literature, as well as readers generally interested in Intermediality Studies.
Essays on Word/Music Adaptation and on Surveying the Field
The twelve essays presented in this volume are drawn from the Fifth International Conference on Word and Music Studies held at Santa Barbara, CA, in 2005. The conference was organized and sponsored by The International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA) and in its central section explored the theme of “Word/Music Adaptation”. In these wide-ranging papers, a great variety of cases of intermedial transposition between music, literature, drama and film are examined. The music of Berlioz, Biber, Chopin, Carlisle Floyd, Robert Franz, Bernard Herrmann, Liszt, Richard Strauss, Verdi, and pop singer Kate Bush confronts and commingles with the writings of Emily Brontë, Goethe, Nancy Huston, George Sand, and Shakespeare in these cutting-edge adaptation studies. In addition, four films are discussed: Wuthering Heights, Fedora, Otello, and The Notebook. The articles collected will be of interest not only to music and literary scholars, but also to those engaged in the study of adaptation theory, semiotics, literary criticism, narrative theory, art history, feminism or postmodernism.
Romantic Empiricism
Nassar distinguishes an understudied philosophical tradition that emerged in Germany in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, traces its development, and argues for its continued significance. She shows how four key thinkers, whom she calls the 'romantic empiricists', developed a distinctive approach to the study of nature, which culminated in an ecological understanding of nature and the human place within it. Nassar contends that the romantic empiricist insights and approaches remain crucial for us today, as we seek to address the environmental crisis.--
From Wordsworth to Stevens
On the occasion of Robert Rehder's seventieth birthday, this Festschrift pays tribute to a forceful and inspiring teacher who is both a poet himself and the author of major studies on Wordsworth and Wallace Stevens.
