"This edited volume forms a compilation of new works on architecture, fine arts, crafts, film, music, dance, theatre, new media, design, advertising, publishing, research and development software, television and radio, which look at the dynamics and impact of the convergence of the arts within the context of the creative industries. They debate issues of engaging audiences through convergence, participation, collaboration and agency in the transformation of traditions, creation of alternative methodologies, education, digital media and design, as well as representation in the creative arts. This book promotes dialogue between and across disciplines with a focus on the varied historical, cultural and technological settings in different parts of the world in which convergence is located. The proceedings describe some of the ways that convergence is restructuring culture and society and the relationship between audiences, producers and content in Asia. Convergence involves changes in the methods culture is created and consumed."--Preface and acknowledgements.

Creating Characters with Personality

  • Categories: Art

From Snow White to Shrek, from Fred Flintstone to SpongeBob SquarePants, the design of a character conveys personality before a single word of dialogue is spoken. Designing Characters with Personality shows artists how to create a distinctive character, then place that character in context within a script, establish hierarchy, and maximize the impact of pose and expression. Practical exercises help readers put everything together to make their new characters sparkle. Lessons from the author, who designed the dragon Mushu (voiced by Eddie Murphy) in Disney's Mulan—plus big-name experts in film, TV, video games, and graphic novels—make a complex subject accessible to every artist.

Proteopathic Seeds and Neurodegenerative Diseases

The misfolding and aggregation of specific proteins is an early and obligatory event in many of the age-related neurodegenerative diseases of humans. The initial cause of this pathogenic cascade and the means whereby disease spreads through the nervous system, remain uncertain. A recent surge of research, first instigated by pathologic similarities between prion disease and Alzheimer’s disease, increasingly implicates the conversion of disease-specific proteins into an aggregate-prone b-sheet-rich state as the prime mover of the neurodegenerative process. This prion-like corruptive protein templating or seeding now characterizes such clinically and etiologically diverse neurological disord...

Admiral Cornelis Matelieff de Jonge was a Director in the Rotterdam chamber of the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC) for three decades in the early 17th century. In May 1605 he set sail from the Dutch Republic with a fleet of 11 ships, and in the following year launched an unsuccessful attack on Portuguese Melaka. After visiting various locations in the region and signing landmark treaties with the rulers of Johor (1606) and Ternate (1607), he returned to the Netherlands in 1608. There he wrote a series of epistolary reports and memoranda that were carefully studied by leading policy makers in the Republic, among them the renowned jurist Hugo Grotius, and the politician and diplomat Johan van ...
