Twelve-year-old Steve Guralt has only one desire: to return to his mother's home. But on the three separate occasions that Steve has attempted to complete that journey, his efforts have been thwarted by people he can only describe as "bad men". While on his way to Houston to see his mom, Steve is so thoroughly traumatized by the necessity of running and hiding that the friendly voice of Carmen Torres, a helpful flight attendant, makes him cringe with fear and distrust. Carmen is able to overcome Steve's initial barriers, and she learns enough of his story to be convinced that this little boy needs help. She promises Steve that any more "bad men" will have to fight her if they try to take him again. Unknown to Carmen, this remarkable little boy, who has no earthly reason to trust anyone, was born with the gift of seeing things as they are. His natural tendency to say what he thinks leads him to a chance encounter with a man who changes his life forever. With the help of Carmen and an intuitive ally, Steve begins the long and difficult journey of training and hardship that will shape the rest of his life.
No One Gardens Alone tells for the first time the story of Elizabeth Lawrence (1904-1985). Like classic biographies of Emily Dickinson and Edna St. Vincent Millay, this fascinating book reveals Lawrence in all her complexity and establishes her, at last, as one of the premier gardeners and gardening writers of the twentieth century. "In this first biography of the renowned gardening writer Elizabeth Lawrence, Emily Herring Wilson reminds us that even quiet lives hold unsuspected passions. Written with graceful clarity, sensitivity, and empathy, this life is a perennial."--Linda H. Davis, author of Onward and Upward: A Biography of Katharine S. White Elizabeth Lawrence (1904-1985) lived a sin...
Growing up in middle class Toledo, Ohio in the 1980s career choices were somewhat limited to working in factories or in the medical field. I came from a very stable home as the oldest of six kids with two hard working parents that provided for us but didnt spoil us. Our parents gave us a private education grades 1 - 12 and my Father helped get me a summer job to pay for college at the local General Motors plant where he worked. In college I had two majors, one in Political Science and one in Communications. As part of my Communications major I got an internship at the local rock n roll radio station which resulted in becoming the morning show producer for the the well known morning show team of Karlson and McKenzie with that radio station. This story is about what happened from there. Its about dealing with the unpredictable changes that happen with your company and your career and what happens when they overlap. Its also a story about who and what can influence your decision to stay, or to leave.

It was in the 1950s that mafia boss, Don Amato Rizoso, determined it was time to enter the lucrative human trafficking business. Five dedicated Rizoso mafia wives stepped up to work tirelessly for one desperate purpose: to rescue innocent girls their cutthroat husbands were trafficking in for modern day sale. While, operating in a netherworld teeming with greed and corruption, the wives officially opened business after their daring rescue of multiple sex slaves from a mafia-owned opium den. As they adjusted to their life of vigilante justice, they faced near rescue misses, they helped set-up a daring underground railroad, and they took down the notorious Cocaine Queen. Amidst betrayal, mass slaughter, forbidden love, and a son whose secret threatened his life, they learned that fighting for what they believed in was anything but easy. Nevertheless, those amazing mafia wives worked doggedly to take down a family empire built on the bodies of children – even if it meant their own lives.
"The best thing about Steampunk is getting to rewrite history." Or so a reviewer said in commenting about Geared Up Writing Steampunk. But author Beth Daniels totally agrees with them! In this, the 3rd edition of the book, she adds a few more elements to the fun PLUS expands the listing of Steampunk publishers from 36 to 43, many of them new to the volume with no longer valid ones dropped. Since the first edition back in 2010, this has been the only volume to focus solely on writing Steampunk fiction and building the Steampunk stage on which characters play. Steampunk is, without a doubt, the most fun a historian in love with the 19th century can have since this is enhancement rewriting of what events might have been if technology got an extra boost a bit earlier. Reviewers say: "...just plain fun to read," "...essential to anyone wanting to [dip] their toe into writing steampunk. It is told in a no nonsense yet humorous way and gave invaluable info." "Inspirational. Must read again with notepad and pen."
