If she is to survive she must find her way home any way she can or live out the rest of her life in "The Keeping Place".
This story has a Narrator who tells the story of a little sunflower's challenges to join other sunflowers in the garden, and escape the dangers there. During this process, a penquin tries to enter the story. However, there is no penquin in the story so the Narrator tries to discourage him from getting in the way of the story telling. Along the way various other animals try to enter the story as well, and they too, are not part of the story. The Narrator tries to find a way to finish the story and make all the animals and the sunflowers happy. This is not an easy task.

This story was inspired by a true story. After feeding and watering her own chickens, the author left the water running in the chicken yard. When she discovered what she had done, she wondered, What must these little chickens be thinking? And that was the basis for this story about SaraJane, a little red chicken who must save her friends from drowning. The chickens are frightened, wet, and thinking they are going to drown. SaraJane convinces them she can fly over the fence and find the farmer. She must go through many adventures to find the farmer, but she is a brave little chicken who won't let a little teasing keep her from saving the day.
