The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discussion about the design of computer and communication systems that can aid the management process. 1.1 Historical Overview We propose that Decision Support System can be considered as a design conception conceived within the computer industry to facilitate the use of computer technology in organisations (Keen, 1991). This framework, built during the late 1970s, offers computer and communication technology as support to the decision process which constitutes, in this view, the core of the management process. The DSS framework offers the following capabilities: • Access: ease of use, wide variety of data, analysis and modelling capacity. • Technological: software gel)eration tools. • Development modes: interactive and evolutionary. Within this perspective, computer and communication technologies are seen as an amplification of the human data processing capabilities which limit the decision process. Thus, the human being is understood metaphorically as a data processing machine. Mental processes are associated with the manipulation of symbols aOO human communication to signal transmission.

How to design a world in which we rely less on stuff, and more on people. We're filling up the world with technology and devices, but we've lost sight of an important question: What is this stuff for? What value does it add to our lives? So asks author John Thackara in his new book, In the Bubble: Designing for a Complex World. These are tough questions for the pushers of technology to answer. Our economic system is centered on technology, so it would be no small matter if "tech" ceased to be an end-in-itself in our daily lives. Technology is not going to go away, but the time to discuss the end it will serve is before we deploy it, not after. We need to ask what purpose will be served by th...

For the recorded history of management, the world has managed value creation according to what can be seen, touched and proven. In today's knowledge-based economy, value creation is derived primarily from how well firms manage intangibles (knowledge, service, expectations, response time, innovation, change management, etc). The large capital outlays that signified the manufacturing economy are no longer required. In fact, such 'tangibles' now explain less than 20% of the value of most publicly listed firms. For example, Time Warner has only 6.49% of its value attributable to tangibles. As such, for every $1 of true value, only $0.065 cents is being measured and managed by conventional manage...

Demands made on the management skills of Britain′s 2.5 million managers increase continually. Each year 90,000 people take courses to improve their management skills. Colleges and universities are expanding to meet this demand for better qualified managers. Employers increasingly regard training as an investment in people. But companies often do not fully understand the challenge of combining a career with study and individuals may underestimate the demands of part-time study. Study Skills for Managers has been developed with all managers in mind. It emphasizes the needs of those beginning a part-time MBA or Diploma, but is also relevant to all managers concerned with self development and ...

Change Management Excellence

Working with top British and American companies for over thirty years, Martin Roberts has developed an enviable reputation for solving problems. He attributes this success to his ability to adapt and apply NLP, Behavioural Modification, Gestalt therapy and Transactional Analysis techniques from the field of organisational psychology. This book is about achieving excellent change management using a variety of techniques and contains many new concepts and applications for consultants, would-be consultants and everyone involved in change in a business setting. It also provides an intriguing insight into why many fashionable 'cook-book approaches' to change run into problems - and how to avoid repeating them.
