Imperial Gullies

Once the grain basket for South Africa, much of Lesotho has become a scarred and treeless wasteland. The nation's spectacular gullying has concerned environmentalists and conservationists for more than half a century, In Imperial Gullies: Soil Erosion and Conservation in Lesotho, Kate B. Showers documents the truth behind this devastation. Showers reconstructs the history of the landscape, beginning with a history of the soil. She concludes that Lesotho's distinctive erosion chasms, called dongas, often cited as an example of destructive land-use practices by African farmers, actually were caused by colonial and postcolonial practices. The residents of Lesotho emerge as victims of a failed t...

That Blue Thing

I was born to a poor family in Sri Lanka. As a koel came to roost in our nest and my early marriage to my sweetheart I was forced to leave Sri Lanka and come to England aiming to complete my higher studies. As a student I found it extremely difficult to make both ends meet with three children. The biggest problem that I had was to find suitable accommodation for my family. On completion of my studies I found employment with Consulting Engineers and continued my career in Engineering until the present day, working on many varied projects: Motorway Bridges, Building structures, Ships and North Sea Oil Fields. You may find it very interesting to read more my charity work, Terrorism in Sri Lanka and about my overland trips.

Chelsea to Cairo-- 'Taylor-made' Water Through Eleven Reigns and in Six Continents

This book records the history of John Taylor and Sons and their predecessors. Gwilym Roberts describes civilisation as a product of engineering. In this book he demonstrates how mankind's dependence on technology goes back to the earliest civilisations, when irrigation systems enabled our ancestors to abandon a nomadic existence and when artisans produced the artefacts needed for both existence and recreation. The author acknowledges that engineers have built on the discoveries and inventions of scientists and converted the earth's natural resources into the energy and goods on which our modern civilisation entirely depends. He describes engineers as the heroes of the nineteenth century, but...

Water, Life and Civilisation

A unique interdisciplinary study of the relationships between climate, hydrology and human society from 20,000 years ago to the present day within the Jordan Valley. It describes how state-of-the-art models can simulate the past, present and future climates of the Near East, reviews and provides new evidence for environmental change from geological deposits, builds hydrological models for the River Jordan and associated wadis and explains how present day urban and rural communities manage their water supply. The volume provides a new approach and new methods that can be applied for exploring the relationships between climate, hydrology and human society in arid and semi-arid regions throughout the world. It is an invaluable reference for researchers and advanced students concerned with the impacts of climate change and hydrology on human society, especially in the Near East.
