The Nordic Countries and Africa
The Nordic Africa Institute has asked one representative from each Nordic country to give an account of how their respective countries have dealt with Africa over the years (in some cases even over the centuries) but with an emphasis on the last 50 years. They were also asked to indicate what role Africa has played in the politics, trade, etc. of their countries. The diversity of the invited authors, backgrounds and fields of specialization is reflected in their contributions, but the authors have one thing in common: a long experience from, and deep engagement in, Africa 's development. Lennart Wohlgemuth has been the director of the Nordic Africa Institute since1993.
Researching Africa
Subject: The Nordic Africa Institute started on a modest scale back in 1962 by awarding three travel grants to young Nordic scholars with an interest in Africa. Fifty years later, the institute has become an internationally renowned centre of research, documentation, publishing and net-working. By coordinating coherent programmes spanning multiple researchers and several sub-topics NAI has helped to strengthen capacity among young academics in Nordic countries by providing travel grants for field research and an academic platform for communicating and discussing research findings. Africa's Return Migrants
Many African migrants residing abroad nurture a hope to one day return, at least temporarily, to their home country. In the wake of economic crises in the developed world, alongside rapid economic growth in parts of Africa, the impetus to 'return' is likely to increase. Such returnees are often portrayed as agents of development, bringing with them capital, knowledge and skills as well as connections and experience gained abroad. Yet, the reality is altogether more complex. In this much-needed volume, based on extensive original fieldwork, the authors reveal that there is all too often a gaping divide between abstract policy assumptions and migrants' actual practices. In contrast to the prevailing optimism of policies on migration and development, Africa's Return Migrants demonstrates that the capital obtained abroad is not always advantageous and that it can even hamper successful entrepreneurship and other forms of economic, political and social engagement.

This volume is based on contributions to a seminar that was organized in honor of the Nordic Africa Institute's retiring Director Lennart Wohlgemuth in December 2005. African scholars presented their views on “The Role of Africa in ‘African Studies'”, with Nordic scholars and policymakers responding. The deliberations offer a spectrum of relevant approaches on both academic as well as policy oriented research and advisory work in and on Africa. The contributions bridge the gap between academics and practitioners who share a common commitment to African affairs and seek to support and promote these in the international context. Contributors include: Olu Ajakaiye and William Lyakurwa, the African Economic Research Consortium; Adebayo Olukoshi, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa; Göran Hydén, University of Florida; Arne Tostensen, Chr. Michelsen Institute in Bergen.
