Recent global and national debates have shown that demographic change, the rising incidence of chronic disease, and the unmet need for more personalized care are trends demanding a new, integrated approach to health and social care. The advancement and adoption of technology in both health and social care settings is a valuable tool for encouraging change and improving the quality and efficiency of care provided to patients and care clients.Achieving Effective Integrated E-Care Beyond the Silos presents a collection of real-life examples, frameworks, business models, financial implications, and methods of evaluating the technological tools that are enabling a more human-centered approach to health and social care. Based on relevant research in the field of integrated e-care, this publication is ideally designed for use by practitioners, researchers, and decision-makers in the care field.
This interdisciplinary book explores both the connections and the tensions between sociological, psychological, and biological theories of exhaustion. It examines how the prevalence of exhaustion – both as an individual experience and as a broader socio-cultural phenomenon – is manifest in the epidemic rise of burnout, depression, and chronic fatigue. It provides innovative analyses of the complex interplay between the processes involved in the production of mental health diagnoses, socio-cultural transformations, and subjective illness experiences. Using many of the existing ideologically charged exhaustion theories as case studies, the authors investigate how individual discomfort and wider social dynamics are interrelated. Covering a broad range of topics, this book will appeal to those working in the fields of psychology, sociology, medicine, psychiatry, literature, and history.
Providing a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary analysis of key issues in the field, this topical Research Handbook explores asylum and migration policy in a global context. • Illustrates all the steps in preparing qualitative and quantitative literature reviews. • Emphasizes topic selection, locating literature, and avoiding major pitfalls in evaluating and synthesizing literature. • Shows how to improve literature reviews through the judicious inclusion of statistical results found in the literature. • Provides easy-to-follow advice on how to avoid misrepresenting the results of published research in literature reviews. • The numerous examples throughout the text and the nine model literature reviews clarify the process of following the guidelines for writing solid, state-of-the-art literature reviews. • Shows students how to blend qualitative and quantitative approaches to preparing literature reviews without being overly mathematical. • Two chapters present clear explanations of how to conduct meta-analyses. • All examples have been updated to ensure consistency with the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and the fourth edition of the American Sociological Association’s Style Guide.
Around 2·6 million stillbirths (the death of a baby at 28 weeks’ gestation or more) occur each year. Although 98% of these deaths take place in low-income and middle-income countries, stillbirths also continue to affect wealthier nations, with around 1 in every 300 babies stillborn in high-income countries. This book highlights the rates and causes of stillbirth globally, explores cost-effective interventions to prevent stillbirths (as well as maternal and neonatal deaths), and sets key actions to halve stillbirth rates by 2020. Also included are Comments from professional organisations and parent groups, the latter demonstrating the unique tragedy for families of the birth of a baby bearing no signs of life. This research was launched in London, New York, Hobart, Geneva, New Delhi, Florence, and Cape Town on April 14, 2011.
Obstetrician and gynecologist Magnus Murphy, MD, and journalist/advocate Pauline McDonagh Hull offer a compelling case for surgical delivery as a legitimate birth choice for informed women. By offering a wealth of medical evidence from around the world and thoughtfully countering the many objections detractors have lodged against it, the authors convincingly demonstrate that a planned cesarean birth at thirty-nine- plus weeks is a safe and often preferred alternative to a planned vaginal delivery. An indispensable guide for women, their families, and medical professionals.
