Los debates electorales en México nacieron en la última década del siglo XX. De hecho, se han convertido en hitos de los periodos electorales y en generadores de expectativas entre los votantes acerca de los candidatos, a pesar de que los formatos de estos encuentros han sido rígidos. En este libro se comienza a desentrañar una respuesta a dos preguntas: ¿han dialogado los candidatos en los debates presidenciales? Cuando menos, ¿se han dirigido a sus contrincantes? Un indicador de ello es el uso que han hecho de los pronombres tú, usted, yo, nosotros y hasta él y ella cuando éstos se usan en lugar de tú, o en estrategias como aquéllas del refrán «Te lo digo, Juan, para que me entiendas, Pedro». Se descubre en este estudio quién usó más yo, nosotros, tú, ustedes, o la tercera persona en los debates presidenciales de 1994 a 2012. Tal vez no se llegue a contestar la pregunta de si los candidatos dialogaron o no, pero es un buen principio para saber si, al menos, lo intentaron.
