Advances in Aerospace Guidance, Navigation and Control

Following the successful 1st CEAS (Council of European Aerospace Societies) Specialist Conference on Guidance, Navigation and Control (CEAS EuroGNC) held in Munich, Germany in 2011, Delft University of Technology happily accepted the invitation of organizing the 2nd CEAS EuroGNC in Delft, The Netherlands in 2013. The goal of the conference is to promote new advances in aerospace GNC theory and technologies for enhancing safety, survivability, efficiency, performance, autonomy and intelligence of aerospace systems using on-board sensing, computing and systems. A great push for new developments in GNC are the ever higher safety and sustainability requirements in aviation. Impressive progress w...

Advances in Aerospace Guidance, Navigation and Control

Over the last few decades, both the aeronautics and space disciplines have greatly influenced advances in controls, sensors, data fusion and navigation. Many of those achievements that made the word “aerospace” synonymous with “high–tech” were enabled by innovations in guidance, navigation and control. Europe has seen a strong trans-national consolidation process in aerospace over the last few decades. Most of the visible products, like commercial aircraft, fighters, helicopters, satellites, launchers or missiles, are not made by a single country – they are the fruits of cooperation. No European country by itself hosts a specialized guidance, navigation and controls community lar...

Safe Comp 97

The safe and secure operation ofcomputer systems continues to be the major issue in many applications where there is a threat to people, the environment, investment or goodwill. Such applications include medical devices, railway signalling, energy distribution, vehicle control and monitoring, air traffic control, industrial process control, telecommunications systemsand manyothers. This book represents the proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Computer Safety, Reliability and Security, held in York, UK, 7-10 September 1997. The conference reviews the state ofthe art, experience and new trends in the areas of computer safety, reliability and security. It forms a platform for tec...

This book is a father-son project. Actually its more of a father-son/son-father project. The letters are from Edsel Colvin to his dad, Frank Colvin from the time Edsel graduated from high school in 1941 until he got out of the Army in 1945. Most of the comments, introductions to chapters, and sidebars are also from Edsel to his son, Paul Colvin, most of them in response to questions about the original letters. These comments and other items are in italics throughout the book. Edsels letters follow a small-town Oregon boy from his idyllic summer job as a fire lookout overlooking the Pacific in the Coast Range in 1941, where he was alone for weeks at a time, to the bitter French winter of 1944-45 when he saw his first combat and a fortuitous, but painful, hospital stay. They continue after the end of the war in Europe in May through the summer of 1945, when he was sweating out whether he was going to be sent to fight the Japanese in the Pacific Theater. They end in the fall of 1945 with his long-awaited discharge from the Army in Texas and his return to civilian life in Gold Beach.

Flying Insects and Robots

Flying insects are intelligent micromachines capable of exquisite maneuvers in unpredictable environments. Understanding these systems advances our knowledge of flight control, sensor suites, and unsteady aerodynamics, which is of crucial interest to engineers developing intelligent flying robots or micro air vehicles (MAVs). The insights we gain when synthesizing bioinspired systems can in turn benefit the fields of neurophysiology, ethology and zoology by providing real-life tests of the proposed models. This book was written by biologists and engineers leading the research in this crossdisciplinary field. It examines all aspects of the mechanics, technology and intelligence of insects and...
