Before I Say Goodbye

In this #1 bestselling thriller from the Queen of Suspense, a young woman probing into the mysterious circumstances of her husband’s death receives a message from a medium claiming to be his channel. When Nell MacDermott learns that her husband, architect Adam Cauliff, and three of his business associates have died in an explosion of his new cabin cruiser, she is not only devastated but wracked with guilt. The last time she saw Adam, they had a bitter quarrel over her plan to run for the congressional seat long held by her grandfather; she had told him not to come home. As the investigation into the boat’s explosion proceeds, Nell learns that it was not an accident but a bomb. Despite her skepticism, Nell is swayed by her great-aunt Gert, a believer in psychic powers, to see a medium claiming to be Adam’s channel. While trying to unravel the threads of Adam’s past and his violent end, Nell consults the medium, who transmits messages to her with instructions from Adam. Before I Say Goodbye reaches a powerful climax in Nell’s final encounter with the medium, in which she learns the truth about the explosion—a truth she can’t be allowed to live and tell.

Mount Pleasant Borough, Westmoreland County

Mount Pleasant is a small borough in the Laurel Highlands of Westmoreland County with an immeasurable history. Originally a Native American trail, Main Street was used by Gen. Edward Braddock in 1755 on his journey to his 16th encampment. Generations have lived here since the town was incorporated in 1828. Many immigrants from Poland, Italy, Germany, and Ireland came here to work in the coal, coke, and glass industries, which were growing quickly and spurring successful businesses. The coke works of Henry Clay Frick was established in 1881. Bryce Brothers Glass began in 1896 and became well known for blown stemware and tableware. L.E. Smith Glass Company manufactured handmade American pressed glass in various colors and styles beginning in 1907. The success of these industries led to the Glass Festival, held annually in September. Today, in the center of town is Diamond Memorial Square, the quintessential symbol of Mount Pleasant, where the World War I doughboy was erected in 1924. Mount Pleasant Borough, Westmoreland County shares photographs and stories that illustrate the strong community ties of the area.

Fountain Inn

Before there was an inn and a fountain, the present town of Fountain Inn was half Indian Territory bisected by the "Old Indian Boundary Line." It was established in 1766 by a treaty made between Old Hop, the head of the Cherokees, and Gov. James Glen of the province of South Carolina. The Cherokees used this area--a region of dense forests, canebrakes, and springs of water--for hunting deer, turkeys, panthers, bears, wolves, wildcats, and even buffalo. Only a few settlers had moved to the territory prior to the Revolutionary War. The Fairview Presbyterian Church community was not settled until 1786. Around 1830, a stagecoach stop was established where there was not only an inn but also a spring of water that gushed two feet in the air like a fountain. In time, the stop became known as Fountain Inn. After the War Between the States, Noah Cannon, a resident of the Greer area, bought up huge tracts of land, and so began the village that was chartered in 1886.
