Bygone Brisbane

Like putting old wine into new bottles, this collection of 7 papers by historian Rod Fisher offers a goodly drop for anyone thirsting for the history and heritage of the Brisbane region. They were originally written from 1991-2010, only a couple having seen the light of day. That was because they were mostly commissioned at greater length – and dealt with specific issues: 1. How ‘midnight demolitions’ of the old Bellevue Hotel, Cloudland Ballroom and Commonwealth Bank brought about the 1st protective heritage legislation in Qld. 2. To what extent the oral testimony of continuity and descent of the Turrbal people around Brisbane was matched by the historical record. 3. How Yeronga Memor...

Brisbane: Schemes and Dreams

This volume of eleven papers had its origins back in June 1992 when the Brisbane History Group presented a seminar entitled ‘150 years ago: Profiles of Brisbane in 1842’ at the Commissariat Stores. Most of the papers delivered on that day were published in a previous volume, Brisbane: Squatters, settlers and surveyors, BHG Papers No.16. Although it was intended that the focus of this collection would be primarily immigration, the more general term arrivals has been chosen to more accurately reflect the inclusion of some of the earlier chapters dealing with exploration, survey and settlement. Written by amateurs, professionals and academics, the chapters look at the achievements, contribu...

The Making of a Metropolis

Brisbane began as a disreputable convict establishment. All the same it was named after the governor of New South Wales, General Sir Thomas Brisbane. Real development of the Moreton Bay district and Brisbane its maritime, administrative and commercial centre occurred quite rapidly after free settlement in 1842. When Queensland was separated from NSW and Brisbane was incorporated as a municipality in 1859, its attributes ensured that it would become capital of the new colony. Its pre-eminence was subsequently reflected in the political, social and cultural development of the city community. Despite the ravages of depressions in the mid-1860s and early-1890s, a high birth-rate and a vigorous i...

Fettered Frontier

Historian Jennifer Harrison’s latest book Fettered Frontier, Founding the Moreton Bay Settlement 1822–1826, a companion volume to Shackled: Female Convicts at Moreton Bay 1826 –1839 (2016) investigates the struggle to locate and establish an outpost in remote Moreton Bay. She uses original government correspondence, diaries, journals and maps and also examines the many mangled foundation stories from the time of the original site at Redcliffe and its removal to a location on the Brisbane River. The search for the river involved several exploratory voyages, the discovery of convict timber getters who had totally lost their bearings and the helpful local Aboriginal people. The stream, shrouded by mangroves, was finally discovered. A significantly sized waterway, it was appropriately named for Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane as was the campsite on its bank. Much research has concentrated on accurately re-creating economic, climatic and legal back stories together with defining the characters who made the decisions in London, Port Jackson (Sydney) and locally as well as the convicts who undertook the heavy manual work. Happy 200th Birthday, Brisbane — you have come a long way.

The Best of Colonial Brisbane

Packed inside this unique collection on colonial Brisbane are no less than 22 essays by historian Rod Fisher. Most were published as scattered articles in various formats over 25 years, 3 have never seen the light of day and all are brought up to date. While stepping through the years from 1842-1901 and sometimes further as a continuum, they are grouped under 5 main themes. ‘Occupation’ deals with early settlement, employment and pursuits until the 1860s. That involves the lie of the land including the town, its old windmill, industry, photography, cultural associations and personnel. The next theme of ‘Alienation’ traverses the same years in exposing, as never before, the aboriginal...

Brisbane: Training, Teaching and Turmoil

Brisbane: Training, Teaching and Turmoil ~ Tertiary Education 1825-2018 looks at higher education before the advent of formal colleges and classes, and how it evolved into the multi-billion dollar university sector of today. The book also considers the problems and issues confronting tertiary education and its likely future in Brisbane. Fourteen Brisbanites contributed to this book. Some are academics, some are amateur historians – but all have a scholarly passion for, and depth of knowledge in, their field. They were asked to write, not simply about the institutions, but about the ordinary people and how they learnt rather than how or where something was taught. We asked the authors to tr...
