An insider's account of the art and artists of the most interesting Russian artistic phenomenon since the Russian Avant-Garde. In the 1970s and 1980s, a group of “unofficial” artists in Moscow—artists not recognized by the state, not covered by state-controlled media, and cut off from wider audiences—created artworks that gave artistic form to a certain historical moment: the experience of Soviet socialism. The Moscow conceptualists not only reflected and analyzed by artistic means a spectacle of Soviet life but also preserved its memory for a future that turned out to be different from the officially predicted one. They captured both the shabby austerity of everyday Soviet life and ...

A new book by Boris Groys acknowledges the problem and potential of art's complex relationship to power. Art has its own power in the world, and is as much a force in the power play of global politics today as it once was in the arena of cold war politics. Art, argues the distinguished theoretician Boris Groys, is hardly a powerless commodity subject to the art market's fiats of inclusion and exclusion. In Art Power, Groys examines modern and contemporary art according to its ideological function. Art, Groys writes, is produced and brought before the public in two ways—as a commodity and as a tool of political propaganda. In the contemporary art scene, very little attention is paid to the ...

Management and organization research has rediscovered individual agency, innovation and entrepreneurship. As such, there is a risk of overlooking the power of self-reinforcing processes in and among organizations. This volume redirects attention to these processes, including: escalating commitment, organizational imprinting and path dependence.

The first picture that meets visitors to the National Gallery at its main entrance is not an Old Master, nor an Impressionist and it does not hang on a wall. Set into the floor of the first landing in the Gallery's main entrance is The Awakening of the Muses, a marble mosaic laid in 1933 by the Russian-born artist Boris Anrep (1885-1969). The subject is worthy of an Old Master and of a place of honour in a noble palace, but Anrep's modern Muses take their chances underfoot in a busy public place, and are the centrepiece of a celebration of everyday life, with mosaics of The Labours of Life to the west, The Pleasures of Life to the east, and The Modern Virtues to the north. Anrep was an assoc...

Hindsight

Boris Vallejo decided to create this photographic paean to the female derriere partly as a tribute and partly as a challenge: "After all, I asked myself, how many ways can you present one body part?" Hindsight, now in paperback, answers that question. In 100 color and black-and-white images, Vallejo renders the object of his (admitted) obsession with elegance and eroticism. In Hindsight, Vallejo returns to the heart of his inspiration - his love for the human body. He brings to this work the same classic composition and eye for the artistic potential of the body that enliven his paintings. His many fans, as well as photography and erotic art lovers of every kind, will find his exploration of a subject rarely touched upon a refreshing departure from other photography books.

If all things in the world can be considered as sources of aesthetic experience, then art no longer holds a privileged position. Rather, art comes between the subject and the world, and any aesthetic discourse used to legitimize art must also necessarily serve to undermine it. Following his recent books Art Power and The Communist Postscript, in Going Public Boris Groys looks to escape entrenched aesthetic and sociological understandings of art--which always assume the position of the spectator, of the consumer. Let us instead consider art from the position of the producer, who does not ask what it looks like or where it comes from, but why it exists in the first place. Boris Groys is Professor at New York University and Senior Research Fellow at the Academy of Design, Karlsruhe. He is the author of many books, including The Total Art of Stalinism, Ilya Kabakov: The Man Who Flew into Space from His Apartment, Art Power, The Communist Postscript, History Becomes Form: Moscow Conceptualism. e-flux journal Series edited by Julieta Aranda, Brian Kuan Wood, Anton Vidokle

Group Theory

If classical Lie groups preserve bilinear vector norms, what Lie groups preserve trilinear, quadrilinear, and higher order invariants? Answering this question from a fresh and original perspective, Predrag Cvitanovic takes the reader on the amazing, four-thousand-diagram journey through the theory of Lie groups. This book is the first to systematically develop, explain, and apply diagrammatic projection operators to construct all semi-simple Lie algebras, both classical and exceptional. The invariant tensors are presented in a somewhat unconventional, but in recent years widely used, "birdtracks" notation inspired by the Feynman diagrams of quantum field theory. Notably, invariant tensor dia...

Reproduced here for the first time also are a number of previously unpublished paintings, drawings and archival material relating to the artist's life. This book is the first opportunity to discuss Chetkov's work since his death in 2010. Re-imagining Russia represents an important opportunity to showcase the work of this significant Russian artist, who was a leading figure of the Russian avant-garde following the Second World War.

Group Theory in Chemistry and Spectroscopy

This handbook on group theory is geared toward chemists and experimental physicists who use spectroscopy and require knowledge of the electronic structures of the materials they investigate. Accessible to undergraduate students, it takes an elementary approach to many of the key concepts. Rather than the deductive method common to books on mathematics and theoretical physics, the present volume introduces fundamental concepts with simple examples, relating them to specific chemical and physical problems. The text is centered on detailed analysis of examples. Since neither chemists nor spectroscopists require theorem proofs, very few appear here. Instead, the focus remains on the principal conclusions, their meaning, and their use. In keeping with the text's practical bias, the main results of group theory are presented in all sections as procedures, making possible their systematic and step-by-step-application. Each chapter contains problems that develop practical skill and provide a valuable supplement to the text.
