A wealth of resources and topics of discussion from the Engineering Solutions for Sustainability: Materials and Resources workshop held in Switzerland in 2009 Natural resources are the lifeblood of agricultural and industrial endeavors that contribute to our social and economic well-being. Yet, even as these resources dwindle from mismanagement, there is still no clear consensus in the engineering community of what actually defines "sustainable engineering." This publication offers the engineering profession a multi-disciplinary blueprint for action by presenting topics of discussion from the Engineering Solutions for Sustainability: Materials and Resources workshop held at the école Polyte...

This book introduces beryllium; its history, its chemical, mechanical, and physical properties including nuclear properties. The 29 chapters include the mineralogy of beryllium and the preferred global sources of ore bodies. The identification and specifics of the industrial metallurgical processes used to form oxide from the ore and then metal from the oxide are thoroughly described. The special features of beryllium chemistry are introduced, including analytical chemical practices. Beryllium compounds of industrial interest are identified and discussed. Alloying, casting, powder processing, forming, metal removal, joining and other manufacturing processes are covered. The effect of composi...
Physical chemistry covers diverse topics, from biochemistry to materials properties to the development of quantum computers. Physical chemistry applies physics and math to problems that interest chemists, biologists, and engineers. Physical chemists use theoretical constructs and mathematical computations to understand chemical properties and describe the behavior of molecular and condensed matter. Their work involves manipulations of data as well as materials. Physical chemistry entails extensive work with sophisticated instrumentation and equipment as well as state-of-the-art computers. This new volume presents a selection of articles on topics in the field.
The Light Metals symposia at the TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition present the most recent developments, discoveries, and practices in primary aluminum science and technology. The annual Light Metals volume has become the definitive reference in the field of aluminum production and related light metal technologies. The 2023 collection includes contributions from the following symposia: · 60 Years of Taking Aluminum Smelting Research and Development from New Zealand to the World: An LMD Symposium in Honor of Barry J. Welch · Alumina & Bauxite · Aluminium Industry Emissions Measurement, Reporting & Reduction · Aluminium Waste Management & Utilisation · Aluminum Alloys, Characterization and Processing · Aluminum Reduction Technology · Cast Shop Technology · Electrode Technology for Aluminum Production · Scandium Extraction and Use in Aluminum Alloys
In order to ensure effective military operations and continued warfighter safety, the functionality and integrity of the equipment used must also be ensured. For the past several years, the Nondestructive Evaluation Branch at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has focused actively on the development of embedded sensing technologies for the real-time monitoring of damage states in aircraft, turbine engines, and aerospace structures. These sensing technologies must be developed for use in environments ranging from the normal to the extreme, confronting researchers with the need to understand issues involving reliability, wireless telemetry, and signal processing methods. Additionally, th...
This book deals with the concepts of structural integrity from safe life to damage tolerance to holistic structural integrity processes, which are all part of a reliability-centered closed loop design approach. Volume 1 introduces the concepts of structural integrity and the basics of fatigue design, including the development of safe life fatigue design concepts based on traditional continuum mechanics. An extensive discussion of discontinuities is presented to illustrate their importance to all deformation mechanisms and especially the mechanisms of fatigue. The historical aspects of fatigue design are also introduced with emphasis on the stress-life and strain-life approaches, along with the many factors that affect fatigue life of structures and their utilization in society. Latter chapters of the book briefly discuss the extraneous effects on fatigue such as corrosion, fretting, wear, creep, and accidental damage. These will be dealt with in more detail in latter volumes. Finally, the book gives many examples of fatigue failures that have occurred in history and cites ways these could have been prevented and the lessons learned from such fatigue failures.
Nothing stays the same for ever. The environmental degradation and corrosion of materials is inevitable and affects most aspects of life. In industrial settings, this inescapable fact has very significant financial, safety and environmental implications. The Handbook of Environmental Degradation of Materials explains how to measure, analyse, and control environmental degradation for a wide range of industrial materials including metals, polymers, ceramics, concrete, wood and textiles exposed to environmental factors such as weather, seawater, and fire. Divided into sections which deal with analysis, types of degradation, protection and surface engineering respectively, the reader is introduc...
