Machinic Deconstruction: Literature / Politics / Technics
Taking its cue from poststructuralist deconstruction, this study develops a new concept of technics, technique, and technology. This new concept of technics is located at a quasi-ontological level, and it thereby becomes possible to renegotiate the relation between being and technics. Technics is understood as an operative force that is inscribed with multiplicity and heterogeneity from the very outset, while at the same time defying rigid order and origin. This leads to a new conceptualization of the machine. The author distinguishes between three different machines: a literary machine, a metaphysical machine, and a political machine. These three machines constantly interrelate, but while the metaphysical machine plays a decisive role in structuring the interrelation between these three machines, the literary machine plays a decisive role in deconstructing the interrelations.

Art and Activism in the Age of Systemic Crisis
This book examines how renewed forms of artistic activism were developed in the wake of the neoliberal repression since the 1980s. The volume shows the diverse ways in which artists have sought to confront systemic crises around the globe, searching for new and enduring forms of building communities and reimagining the political horizon. The authors engage in a dialogue with these artistic efforts and their histories – in particular the earlier artistic activism that was developed during the civil rights era in the 1960s and 70s – providing valuable historical insight and new conceptual reflection on the future of aesthetic resilience. Evil, Law and the State
The topic of “evil” means different things depending upon context. For some, it is an archaic term, while others view it as a central problem of ethics, psychology, or politics. Coupled with state power, the problem of evil takes on a special salience for most observers. When governments do evil –in whatever way we define the term – the scale of harm increases, sometimes exponentially. The evils of state violence, then, demand our attention and concern. Yet the linkage of evil with state power does not resolve the underlying question of how to understand the concepts that we invoke when we use the term. Instead, the question becomes what evil means in the context of and in relation to state power. The fifteen essays in this book bring multiple perspectives to bear on the problems of state-sponsored evil and violence, and on the ways in which law enables or responds to them. The approaches and conclusions articulated by the various contributors sometimes complement and sometimes stand in tension with each other, but as a whole they contribute to our ongoing effort to understand the characteristics and workings of state power, and our need to grapple with the harm it causes.
Interrupting the City
Interrupting the City explores the ways in which artistic practices and interventions intersect with the public sphere. The tactics by which an intervention is achieved may vary, ranging from a media offensive to a riot in the streets, but each time these activities affect the flow or circulation of urban public space, they also reconstitute it. Interrupting the City, edited by Sander Bax, Pascal Gielen and Bram Ieven, proposes the public sphere as a network of social, political and economic forces in constant flux, and attempts to chart the conditions under which art can contribute to or interrupt this process of the construction of public space. This volume brings together a range of internationally renowned theorists and artists to consider the relations between artistic activity and public space, and proposes how artists can develop their voices in the public sphere.

Beyond the Problem of Evil
Beyond the Problem of Evil tackles the reinventing the philosophy of religion by way of a topic familiar to anyone who has encountered the field. By considering how “the problem of evil” is historically structured by commitments to theism alongside the recent calls for cross-cultural relevance in the field, the book offers an argument whereby philosophers of religion may globalize the scope of their work. Drawing on the work of Jacques Derrida and critical theorists of religion, the topic is reframed as an investigation of how social actors perceive necessities and grapple with accidents that disrupt them. In this way, the usual commitments to categories structured by theism no longer prevent cross-cultural studies of “evil” and the stage is set for rethinking the field.

Departing from the relationship between corporeality and performing arts (such as theater, dance, and performance), it turns to a pluriversal understanding of embodiment that resides in the extra violent conditions of contemporary global necro-capitalism in order to conduct a thorough analysis that goes beyond arts and culture. It brings together theoretical academic texts by established and emerging scholars alike, exposing perspectives form different fields (philosophy, cultural studies, performance studies, theater studies, and dance studies) as well as from different geopolitical contexts.
