High Expectations -- the Frentzes of Mankato
Tells the story of a gifted Minnesota man and his attractive, intelligent wife, who encounter great obstacles, in particular mental illness, that limit their success in marriage and their pleasure in life. The story is embedded in a rich family history, with detailed stories of their immigrant and old American forbears as well as their descendants. Third-person autobiographies of their two sons are included. The book gives a thorough depiction of the lives of Roy and Jean Frentz and their sons Brand and John plus a full picture of their forbears, going back to 1812. The title calls attention to plans and goals that were set for family members but not necessarily achieved and why.
The Ultimate Canoe Challenge
Verlen Kruger and his partner Steve Landick wanted to take a canoe trip that would surpass all others, and they did. Paddling their canoes or carrying them on the connecting land passages, they toured North America, from the Arctic Ocean to Baja California, from New Orleans to the coast of Maine, crossing the USA from south to north and west to east. They mastered wild storms on the ocean, often paddled 75-100 miles or more in a day, shot through deadly rapids going downstream, and paddled up several major rivers, reaching the climax by going up the Grand Canyon. Again and again they were warned, "It can't be done" or "You'll never make it", but each time they rose to the challenge and kept going, finally competing a canoe trip of 28,000 miles that lasted three and a half years and was appropriately named The Ultimate Canoe Challenge. This is the story as Verlen lived it.

Grand River Avenue details the history of this historical Michigan roadway, which has served as a footpath, wagon rut, and ultimately a two-lane highway. Grand River Avenue, or Michigan US-16 as it was ultimately designated, is one of Michigan's true "Blue Highways"--an original two-lane, blacktop road still serving as a direct path through roadside America. Originally a Native American trail, this ancient path has been a westbound route from the Straits of Detroit to the eastern shores of Lake Michigan for more than 1,000 years.
