Upon his retirement from active service as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia in 2011, Justice Koontz had completed more than four decades of service to citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In order to recognize that service and help preserve Justice Koontz's legacy as one of the outstanding jurists in Virginia and the United States, the Salem/Roanoke County Bar Association instituted this project to collect all of Justice Koontz's published opinions, both from his tenure as a Justice of the Supreme Court and as an inaugural member of the Court of Appeals of Virginia. This volume is dedicated to the memory of Judge Bernard G. Barrow, one of the "gang of ten" original members of the Court of Appeals. In January 1995, Judge Barrow announced his intention to retire from the Court in June of that year. Sadly, just over two month before his retirement would be come effective, Judge Barrow suffered a fatal seizure and died on March 21, 1995.

China's Western Horizon

Under the ambitious leadership of President Xi Jinping, China is zealously transforming its wealth and economic power into potent tools of global political influence. But China's foreign policy initiatives, even the vaunted "Belt and Road," will be shaped and redefined as they confront the ground realities of local and regional politics outside China. In China's Western Horizon, Daniel S. Markey, a scholar of international relations and former member of the U.S. State Department's policy planning staff, previews how China's efforts are likely to play out along its "western horizon: " across the swath of Eurasia that includes South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Courageous: Legacy

This new 10th anniversary edition includes content that covers the story of the men of Courageous ten years later. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they’re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift farther and farther away from them. Will they be able to find a way to serve and protect those who are most dear to them? When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God . . . and to their children?

China's South-South Relations

Beijing has formed South-South relations with many developing countries and emerging economies by providing foreign aid, setting up trade agreements, making investments, and employing public diplomacy. China's economic rise and diplomatic initiatives to expand strategic partnerships with countries of the Global South are starting to impact the very structure of international relations. The contributions to this volume provide insights into the rapidly unfolding trans-regional dynamics of China's fast developing formal and informal ties to Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The book also reveals the inadequacies of the traditional architecture of area studies in taking up the challenge of trans-regional research. Chinese in Dubai offers the first book-length study of the experiences of overseas Chinese living in the most prominent global city in the Arabian Gulf and the broader Middle East region. Evolving around three themes—money, pride, and spirituality, this book delineates the changing shape of Chinese spaces in metropolitan Dubai, explicates how a frontier mentality affects intergroup relations, identity construction, and religious experiences in the Chinese diaspora. It documents how the Chinese make sense of their struggles, sufferings, prosperity, and success in relation to Dubai’s fast changing social environment. This book is a timely endeavour to gauge the implications of a rising China and the shifting patterns of the international economic and political order for the global Chinese diaspora.
