Soaring past most nations' notion of culture Brazil boasts jungle, concrete, football, corruption, carnival and the place where first and third worlds make easy bedfellows. That such a place is well-charted through maps and guides is hardly surprising but the creative output and impressions of that country have largely been ignored. "Brasil "takes the center stage to lap up the works produced (exclusively for this book) by designers from all corners of the globe.

Brasil Island, better known as Hy Brasil, is a phantom island. In the fourteenth century Mediterranean mapmakers marked it on nautical charts to the west of Ireland, and its continued presence on maps over the next six hundred years inspired enterprising seafarers to sail across the Atlantic in search of it. Writers, too, fell for its lure. While English writers envisioned the island as a place of commercial and colonial interest, artists and poets in Ireland fashioned it into a fairyland of Celtic lore. This pioneering study first traces the cartographic history of Brasil Island and examines its impact on English maritime exploration and literature. It investigates the Gaelicization process that the island underwent in nineteenth century and how it became associated with St Brendan. Finally, it pursues the Brasil Island trope in modern literature, the arts and popular culture.

Hy Brasil

"Sidony Redruth is a fraud. After faking the winning entry in a writing competition she has been sent by her editor to write the first-ever travel book on Hy Brasil, a near-mythical island somewhere in the Atlantic. Taking the island location as her starting point, Elphinstone throws in some old-fashioned piracy, a lost treasure, modern-day drug smuggling, political intrigue, an active volcano and a tragic love affair. Told through Sidony's notes for her book, Hy Brasil has all the elements of a classic adult adventure story infused with a comtemporary twist.".
