Landscapes Or Seascapes?
This book deals with the geographical evolution of the coastal areas adjacent to the North Sea, with a focus upon the last two thousand years. Although many articles are reworked in a fundamental way, most of them are the result of a conference which took place in 2010 at the University of Ghent (Belgium). The various disciplines in which the coastal plains are studied too often remain within their own borders, and so the authors have set out to thoroughly interweave them in the hope that this will spur greater interdisciplinary cooperation. This collection of texts is intended to appeal not just to experts in historical geography, but to historians and scientists working in any field who wish to gain insights into the present ‘state of play’.
Example Or Alter Ego?
The present collection of essays on the subject of the portrait historie treats examples of this subgenre of portraiture stemming from Classical Antiquity, medieval times, the Renaissance and Baroque period, but also from Romantic era and the modern movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A portrait historie can be described as an artistic rendering of an individual in the guise of a historical figure. In a broader and more modern sense it can be understood as a representation or figuration of the self which appropriates and incorporates visual metaphors by means of allegorisation and identification. This book is the result of a research project of the Art History Department in collaboration with the Archaeology Department of the Faculty of Arts of the Radboud University Nijmegen.

Aspects of Power and Authority in the Middle Ages
Concepts of power and authority and the relationship between them were fundamental to many aspects of medieval society. The essays in this collection present a series of case studies that range widely, both chronologically and geographically, from Lombard Italy to early-modern Iberia and from Anglo-Saxon, Norman, and later-medieval England to twelfth-century France and the lands beyond the Elbe in the conversion period. Manichaean Texts in Syriac
This is the first major work devoted entirely to the Aramaic-Syriac roots of Manichaeism containing inter alia editiones principes of hitherto unknown Syriac-Manichaean texts as well as other editions, studies of the palaeography and origin of the earliest specimens of Manichaean script, interpretation of the texts in the context of Enochic Jewish literature and early Syriac literature, an art-historical study of the Mani seal, as well as photo plates of all the manuscripts edited in the volume.

The Medieval Dominicans
The Order of Preachers has famously bred some of the leading intellectual lights of the Middle Ages. While Dominican achievements in theology, philosophy, languages, law, and sciences have attracted much scholarly interest, their significant engagement with liturgy, the visual arts, and music remains relatively unexplored. These aspects and their manifold interconnections form the focal point of this interdisciplinary volume. The different chapters examine how early Dominicans positioned themselves and interacted with their local communities, where they drew their influences from, and what impact the new Order had on various aspects of medieval life. The contributors to this volume address issues as diverse as the making and illustrating of books, services for a king, the disposition of liturgical space, the creation of new liturgies, and a Dominican-made music treatise. In doing so, they seek to shed light on the actions and interactions of medieval Dominicans in the first centuries of the Order's existence.
