Brian Gault is one of the 450 survivors of the 'miracle-drug' Thalidomide's exposure to the British market in the mid-twentieth century. To the shock of his parents, he was born with no arms. Otherwise physically and mentally fit and able, Brian has struggled throughout his life to overcome the restrictions society has tried to place on him, beginning with the cumbersome prosthetic arms of his childhood, which he had to sabotage to escape wearing them! Brian's story is lively, funny, challenging and moving and centres around his call to Christian faith. With a foreword by Joni Eareckson Tada.

Explore metaphors in the exquisite and enigmatic poetry of Song of Songs One of the chief difficulties in interpreting the Song's lyrics is the unusual imagery used to depict the lovers' bodies. Why is the maiden's hair compared to a flock of goats (4:1), the man’s cheeks likened to garden beds of spice (5:13), and the eyes of both lovers described as doves (4:1; 5:12)? While scholars speculate on the significance of these images, a systematic inquiry into the Song's body metaphors is curiously absent. Based on insights from cognitive linguistics, this study incorporates biblical and comparative data to uncover the meaning of these metaphors surveying literature in the eastern Mediterranean (and beyond) that shares a similar form (poetry) and theme (love). Gault presents an interpretation of the Song's body imagery that sheds light on the perception of beauty in Israel and its relationship to surrounding cultures. Features Exploration of the Song's use of universal themes and culturally specific variations Discussion of the Song's literary structure and unity

My Teaching Days and the Lessons I Learned

When John Fairbrother converted to Christianity in the 1970s, his entire life changed. Because of a spiritual revival and an enlightened heart that could love his Savior, John’s life change affected every aspect of his life, including in the classroom, and his methodology in classroom discipline, grading habits, and assembly material changed dramatically. He adopted a new sense of boldness while instructing—from teaching Old Testament prophets and miracles during school assemblies, witnessing to students in his class who showed interest in his faith, or merely loving his students as his own children, John truly desired for his students to know and love his God as much as he did. In My Te...

People and Computers XVIII - Design for Life

The eighteenth annual British HCI Conference chose as its theme Design for Life. 'Life' has many facets, from work (of course, or should we say inevitably!) to travel, fun and other forms of leisure. We selected 23 full papers out of 63 submitted, which covered our interaction with computer systems in a variety of types of life situation — including games, tourism and certain types of work — and also covered a variety of stages in our lives, from the young to the elderly. These papers were complemented by others that described more traditional aspects of research in the field of human-computer interaction. In putting together the programme we followed a three-stage process. First each pa...

Retribution or Reality?

The book of Job is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, literary accomplishments of the ancient world, yet in many ways it is just as relevant today as it was then. This book examines Job from a comparative theological perspective in order to help contemporary readers access it, learn from it, and apply its insights to contemporary life.
