Enabling Lives provides a look at the disability civil rights movement through an intimate portrayal of the lives of several of its key leaders. Each of the chapters of this book is a separate authorized biography of such prominent figures as Frank Bowe, Tony Coelho, Justin Dart, Judy Heumann, Evan Kemp, and Harold Russell. Enabling Lives provides not only an accurate historical record of key moments in the development of civil rights for individuals with disabilities, but also invites the reader to become acquainted with the individuals who helped to shape the movement and to view history in the making through the eyes of those who were helping to create it. Each of the book's subjects has provided countless hours of interviews, recollections and "war stories" into the making of this important work, helping to create a legacy that hopefully will be carried on by the current and future leaders of the movement.

The presentational style (conc...

Right after World War II, the United States felt secure in its atomic monopoly. With the American "Pax Atomica" in place, the free world held an apparent strategic advantage over the Soviet bloc and saw itself as a bulwark against communist expansion. But America's atomic superiority in the early postwar years was more fiction than fact. From 1945 until 1950, the U.S. atomic arsenal was poorly coordinated, equipped and funded. The newly formed Atomic Energy Commission inherited from the Manhattan Engineer District a program suffering from poor organization, failing infrastructure and internal conflict. The military establishment and the Air Force's Strategic Air Command little knew what to do with this new weapon. The Air Force and the AEC failed to coordinate their efforts for a possible atomic air offensive and war plans were ill-conceived, reflecting unrealistic expectations of Air Force capabilities and possible political outcomes. This lack of preparedness serves as a case study in the tenuous nature of American civilian-military relationships. Crossing the Great Divide

The 1990s were years of turmoil and transformation in American work experiences and employment relationships. Trends including the growth of contingent labor, the erosion of the stable employment contract, the restructuring of jobs and companies, and the emergence of opportunity-enhancing employee participation programs reconfigured occupations, career paths, and labor market opportunities. Vicki Smith analyzes this shift, asking how workers navigated their way across the divide between bad jobs and good jobs, between jobs organized hierarchically and jobs requiring greater worker involvement, and between temporary and stable work. Crossing the Great Divide uses original case study data from...
