What I didn’t know [when starting to research and write this book]: I would become full-on, hopelessly obsessed with finding out every arcane detail about the artists gathered in these pages, whether they are living or long gone. Those myriad facts are puzzle pieces that—even though some pieces are missing—form portraits of extraordinary people with a hunger for jazz and other creative artforms, a determination to overcome struggles, and a deep joy for creating profound expression. —Chris Wong, from the Preface and Introduction to Journeys to the Bandstand. Journeys to the Bandstand: Thirty Jazz Lives in Vancouver chronicles the creative lives and musical journeys of thirty extraordi...

Biomedical Science Practice

Biomedical scientists are the foundation of modern healthcare, from cancer screening to diagnosing HIV, from blood transfusion for surgery to food poisoning and infection control. Without biomedical scientists, the diagnosis of disease, the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment, and research into the causes and cures of disease would not be possible. The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series has been written to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today. It draws together essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis. Assuming on...

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) has been a major preoccupation of New Labour's project of social and political renewal, with ASBOs a controversial addition to crime and disorder management powers. Thought by some to be a dangerous extension of the power to criminalise, by others as a vital dimension of local governance, there remains a concerning lack of evidence as to whether or not they compound social exclusion. This collection, from an impressive panel of contributors, brings together opinion, commentary, research evidence, professional guidance, debate and critique in order to understand the phenomenon of anti-social behaviour. It considers the earliest available evidence in order to evaluate the Government's ASB strategy, debates contrasting definitions of anti-social behaviour and examines policy and practice issues affected by it. Contributors ask what the recent history of ASB governance tells us about how the issue will develop to shape public and social policies in the years to come. Reflecting the perspectives of practitioners, victims and perpetrators, the book should become the standard text in the field.

Storming St. Nazaire

This WWII history examines an early British commando raid on Nazi occupied France through extensive interviews with survivors from both sides. On March 28th, 1942, a combined force of British Commandos and Royal Navy disembarked for the Atlantic coast of Nazi-occupied France. Their mission, Operation Chariot, was a daring amphibious attack on a fortified drydock in the port of Saint-Nazaire. The obsolete destroyer HMS Campbeltown was packed with delayed-action explosives and rammed into the gates of Normandie Dock. Though the dock was destroyed, the underequipped raiding party faced an overwhelming counter-attack. Though the St. Nazaire raid was a significant event in the evolution of special warfare tactics, it has not been studied in detail. Historian James Dorrian draws on interviews with more than a hundred survivors, both British and German, to present this remarkable account. Storming St. Nazaire covers all aspects of the engagement, including the final ironic incident that resulted in more German casualties than the main battle itself.
