Campaigning in the Aftermath of the 2020 Elections

The post-election period of the 2020 presidential campaign is historic not only for the culmination of tensions in the January 6, 2021 storming of the US capitol, but also in the very persistence of campaigning after the election was over. Historically, political campaigns have had only four phases: pre-primary, primary, convention, and general election. In 2020, there was a distinct and active post-election campaign in which President Donald Trump vigorously challenged the election, calling for recounts, court challenges amid charges of voter fraud and irregularities. Speeches, rallies, fundraising and advertising continued weeks past the election. For the first time modern electoral histor...

Derivative Media

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Sequels, reboots, franchises, and songs that remake old songs—does it feel like everything new in popular culture is just derivative of something old? Contrary to popular belief, the reason is not audiences or marketing, but Wall Street. In this book, Andrew deWaard shows how the financial sector is dismantling the creative capacity of cultural industries by upwardly redistributing wealth, consolidating corporate media, harming creative labor, and restricting our collective media culture. Moreover, financialization is trans...

The Value Gap

"In this project, Courtney Brannon Donoghue follows female-driven film projects ("starring, written, produced, and/or directed by women") and the women creating them from pitch to premiere, looking at all the unique challenges they face along the way. She focuses on the ways that industry lore (e.g., "female-led movies don't make money" or "female directors don't have the experience (or desire) to direct big-budget action blockbusters") and established business practices serve to limit women's options or co-opt their stories, using a wide range of research, from conducting extensive interviews and participant observation to engaging with marketing materials, trade publications, and industry ...

Sporting Blackness

Sporting Blackness examines issues of race and representation in sports films, exploring what it means to embody, perform, play out, and contest blackness by representations of Black athletes on screen. By presenting new critical terms, Sheppard analyzes not only “skin in the game,” or how racial representation shapes the genre’s imagery, but also “skin in the genre,” or the formal consequences of blackness on the sport film genre’s modes, codes, and conventions. Through a rich interdisciplinary approach, Sheppard argues that representations of Black sporting bodies contain “critical muscle memories”: embodied, kinesthetic, and cinematic histories that go beyond a film’s plot to index, circulate, and reproduce broader narratives about Black sporting and non-sporting experiences in American society.

When local builders are brought in to renovate, an old chest is unearthed while digging in preparation for the new foundation. After locking it securely inside the inn, Dell retires to her room only to find a new ghost waiting for her, who was likely involved in said train robbery. Kevin Powers calls in an expert to appraise their find but the contents of the chest go missing before he gets there. Can Dell figure out where it's gone before it's lost forever? They say all that glitters is not gold, but sometimes, it truly is!

How Documentaries Went Mainstream

"Documentary feature films have historically existed on the margins of mainstream media. In the U.S., enterprising documentarians have spent most of the past 60 years struggling to find a larger, broader audience for their films. Often negatively associated with longform television journalism and tedious educational programming, documentaries have rarely escaped their perceived status as "cultural vegetables" - good for you, but relatively unappealing. Recently, this marginal status has shifted quite dramatically. Nearly unthinkable a decade ago, documentary films have become reliable earners at the U.S. box office. In 2018 alone, Won't You Be My Neighbor? made almost $23 million, They Shall...
