Compiled from the celebrated archive accumulated by Sir Brinsley Ford, this dictionary identifies over six thousand British and Irish travellers who toured in Italy in the 18th century.
Edition commentée de ce poème latin de 549 vers sur l'art de la peinture qui connut un succès considérable aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles.
Sir Brinsley Ford (1908-99) was a passionate collector from the age of eleven. During a long life he enriched an already important family collection with masterpieces of Italian painting. He was also a discerning patron of contemporary British artists and a pioneering scholar of the Grand Tour. Last but not least, he was a generous friend and benefactor of the National Trust. Sir Brinsley loved sharing his collection with friends and fellow enthusiasts. So it is entirely appropriate that treasures from the Ford Collection should be loaned by his son Augustine to Basildon Park in Berkshire. This richly illustrated catalogue provides the essential record of a memorable occasion.
Spotlights the graphic abilities of Giambattista Tiepolo's most famous son and closest collaborator. The catalogue accompanied an exhibition arranged in collaboration with the Indiana University Art Museum. Four essays pertaining to the artist and his work are followed by color and bandw reproductions and commentary. No index. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

He was a more than useful artist, a colorful figure in early Victorian society and an influential literary critic - it was he who prompted John Murray to publish George Borrow's The Zincali and The Bible in Spain. Yet although his own writings are widely known, very little of consequence has been written about Ford himself."--BOOK JACKET.
`Sheds considerable new light on the nature, development and functions of the orders in a key phase of their history, and goes a long way to explaining how such archaic institutions could flourish in a culture that is commonly thought anti-traditional and especially hostile to the "middle ages"'. Professor JONATHAN BOULTON, University of Notre Dame. This is the first comprehensive study to set the British orders of knighthood properly into the context of the honours system - by analysing their political, social and cultural functions from the Restoration of the monarchy to the end of George II's reign. It examines the revival of the Order of the Garter and the proposals to establish the Orde...
