The Wonderful Mr Willughby
Francis Willughby lived and thrived in the midst of the rapidly accelerating scientific revolution of the seventeenth century. Traveling with his Cambridge tutor John Ray, they decided to overhaul the whole of natural history by imposing order on its messiness and complexity. It was exhilarating, exacting, and exhausting work. Yet before their first book, Ornithology , could be completed, Willughby died in 1672. Since then, Ray's reputation has grown, obscuring that of his collaborator. Now, for the first time, Willughby's story and genius are given the attention they deserve. In his too-short life, Francis Willughby helped found the Royal Society, differentiated birds through identification of their distinguishing features, and asked questions that were, in some cases, centuries ahead of their time.
Birds, Discovery, and Conservation
The British Ornithologists' Club was founded in 1892 and its Bulletin started publication at the same time. Over the years, the Bulletin has had an important influence in the world of ornithology - particularly on its taxonomy. In a sample of 100 species that had, over the last hundred years, been recognised as new to science, it was discovered that 49 of them had first been announced in its pages. A Newsworthy Naturalist:
A Newsworthy Naturalist is a biography of William Yarrell (1784-1856), an influential naturalist at a time when natural history was becoming an important factor in 19th century society. He wrote two important books: A History of British Fishes and A History of British Birds, still being quoted as the authorities well into the next century and admired today, especially for their delightful wood engravings. He was a member and sometime Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice-President of the Zoological, Linnean, and Entomological Societies. He was known to, and greatly admired by, the leading naturalists; Charles Darwin sought Yarrell's advice on several occasions. In addition to his key role as an organiser and disseminator of knowledge about the British fish and bird fauna, Yarrell also conducted significant original scientific research, being perhaps best known as the first person to recognise Bewick's Swan as a separate species from the Whooper Swan, naming it Cygnus bewickii after his illustrious ornithological predecessor. Yarrell owned the London newsagency Jones and Yarrell with his partner, Edward Jones, from 1803 until 1850. They held a royal warrant.
