It's How You Play the Game: International Perspectives on the Study of Sport

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. Sports events, participation, and sports programming in the media have come to play an outsize role in contemporary society. Global events like the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup draw billions of viewers but at the same time sports retain a distinctly local flavor. It’s How You Play the Game: International Perspectives on the Study of Sport covers an extraordinary amount of ground from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. From Egypt and Qatar to the Dominican Republic, Australia, and the US, the authors of this fascinating collection use insights drawn from Anthropology, Communication, Political Economy and Sociology to shed light on the phenomena of sports in the context of politics, identity (personal and collective), business and education, drawing out both the global and local implications of the increasing presence of sports in our lives.

Parental Care in Mammals

The editors of this volume have honored me by their invitation to write its Fore word, an invitation extended because of my editing a book on the maternal behav ior of mammals in 1963. Much as I would like to think that I had opened a new area of study-and so played some part in the appearance of this fine new collec tion of chapters-the facts are quite otherwise. That in 1963 I could assemble the efforts of many distinguished investigators shows that the topic had already engaged their attention, and had for some years past. But even then, the topic had origins extending much farther into the past, to mention only Wiesner and Sheard's book Maternal Behavior in the Rat of 1933. Nevertheless, in 1963 it seemed to me that the study of maternal care in mammals had lagged behind the study of other kinds of social behavior. The present volume does much to establish parental care of the young as a topic central to an understanding of the relation between ontogeny and phylogeny, to the development of the young, to the social organization of the species, and to its preservation. It may now be seen not only as interesting but as a most signifi cant pattern of behavior among mammals.

Fundamentals of Neuroscience and the Law

  • Categories: Law

What does neuroscience tell us about voluntary movement? Why is the definition of “volition” so different from that of the legal definition of “intent”? Why are courts dismissing medically accepted mental health diagnoses? How can we draft better laws that are more scientifically based? What can recent advances in neuroscience tell us about the way we apply the law? This volume provides groundbreaking insights into the areas of scientific evidence and the intersection of neuroscience and law, and is the product of a collaboration by two experts in their respective fields. It is a primer for all those interested in neurolaw.

Anabolic Steroid Abuse

Addresses the question of whether or not anabolic steroids in themselves possess abuse potential or if they simply play a role in the abuse of other substances. A historical overview of the discovery and development of the drug is provided, plus an evaluation of the drug's performance-enhancing effects. Health risks associated with the abuse of anabolic steroids are covered along with the biological reasons why steroids affect the body the way they do. Behavioral effects are also discussed. Charts, graphs and diagrams.

Counterfeit Amateurs

With a Foreword by Ara ParseghianThe debate over big-time college sports, never far from the front pages, has once again moved from simmering to hot. Congress has been investigating the tax-exempt status of the NCAA in part because of questions about how commercialized college sports contribute to educational values. Athletes are challenging the NCAA on antitrust grounds to get a bigger share of the revenue. Against this backdrop, more faculty are beginning to be concerned about what is happening at their own universities and to the educational system as a whole as rampant commercialism further invades campus life through big-time sports. A leader among faculty fighting back has been Allen S...
